free open source software for powerpoint narration?
« on: January 02, 2015, 08:22:28 PM »
Does anyone know a free opensource software to do basic narration with powerpoint presentation that you can put into a video format (ie mp4 or something similar)? Basically just an audio description that accompany the powerpoint presentation with minor editing (cut for lenght for exemple).
Thank you.

There's a mix of stuff here in your question, so it's not 100% clear what you want.

But based on your final sentence, I guess you want a narrated powerpoint presentation, turned into a movie you can just play?

Download some screen recording software like camtasia or camstudio.  Then play the powerpoint and click through and record your screen and voice, and it will make it into a movie.

That's not video editing, like what was asked in your title or first sentence, but sounds like what you want based on the second.

Please clarify otherwise and I'm sure we can recommend something.  :)

Yeah, it sounds like you want to turn Powerpoint slides into like a DVD video with sound? Would take some effort, but it's possible. I'm assuming you're running it in Windows?

I found a program called "Balabloka" that will read whatever text you put into it. You can change the voices and export to MP3. With basic video editing software you could put together a video pretty quickly.

Yes something like that : mp4, flv or a similar format.

This capability (recording narration and exporting as a video, with slide timings) is actually built in in recent versions of PowerPoint. Here's a link to the how-to on office.com for PPT 2010: https://support.office.com/en-au/article/Turn-your-presentation-into-a-video-c140551f-cb37-4818-b5d4-3e30815c3e83?ui=en-US&rs=en-AU&ad=AU

We've done it at work and it's straightforward / works well. Basically you go through the presentation, advancing the slides while recording the narration, and that output is recorded. You might be limited to exporting in .wmv, but you should be able to convert to a more universal format pretty readily.

Good info, thanks.  Welcome to the forums!
