Fixing a broken keezer/freezer - thermostat ?

So, I may have bit off more than I can chew. 

I got a freezer that had been converted to a keezer off a guy from Craigslist.  It is a freezer that doesn't freeze.  No one knew if it was because it was modified to not freeze or if some guy thought he might as well use his broken freezer for something and added a collar.  The guy who I got it from didn't want a keezer and didn't care why it wasn't working. 

Anyway, its mine now.  I pulled the panel open and was looking at the really old internal parts and noticed that one of the wires coming off the thermostat looked...suspect.  So I did what any red blooded American would do.  I wiggled it.  It snapped off at the first jiggle.

It appears to be a grounding wire.  It comes off the thermostat and connects to the frame of the freezer.  The other wires - power, to the compressor, the sensor - are pretty obvious. 

Does anyone know anything about freezer thermostats?  I can add pics if anyone does.

It snapped off the housing, so I'm wondering if (while I trouble shoot how to figure out if this thing will even work) I can just use electrical tape to stick it back on?  Do I even need it?  If it cools at all, I may order a new thermostat and then modify from there...but I don't want to get a new one if the compressor may be bad.  Ugh.  This seemed like such a good idea at the time...

Poundwise:
This is an old post, but if you haven't done anything with the freezer yet, why not try soldering the wire back in place? Obviously unplug the thing first.

Soldering irons and solder are inexpensive and can be used to fix all sorts of things.
