Temporary glasses with existing lenses
« on: June 28, 2012, 06:40:31 AM »
Weird request here. I need to get a new glasses prescription, and I plan on having the manufacturer use my existing frames. That means I'll be without my old glasses for a period.

The idea occurred to me to make makeshift glasses for when I'm doing my computer work (I'm farsighted). I'm looking at some Instructables, but they're all aiming for aesthetically pleasing. I'm just aiming for function until I get my glasses back.

Any ideas?

Are you opposed to spending $20 at ZenniOptical for a new pair of glasses (lenses and frame) to use for that time period, and then it'll give you a backup pair?

You know, the sanest solution would probably be just to go with Zenni for the replacements. If I hate them, I can call them backups.

Wow, I had never heard of Zenni Optical before. Is that place for real? Their glasses are like 1/10 the price of what you pay at the optometrist!

Yes they are for real, I've had several pairs from them already, all were great quality.  My DW on the other hand went to lenscrafters and spent the 10x.

Awesome, I just ordered a new pair of glasses from them last night. $23 out the door. Less than a tenth what I paid for my last pair. I have needed new ones for a while (lenses are all scratched up) but kept holding off because they're so damn expensive! Now I can afford to get a separate pair for outdoorsy stuff, too, which is a major bonus! Then my "nice" frames will stay nicer longer. Plus it won't be a major expense if I break a pair now.

This feels too good to be true. But it is. So awesome...
