Fix Kitchen Cabinet Door in Rental House
« on: June 18, 2012, 01:56:08 AM »
My tenants of 7 years are moving out.  One of the kitchen cabinet doors was damaged by a fist.  The cabinets are from 1982.  I won't be able to find a 100% match in style or color.

Any suggestions on what to do to fix it?  Don't want to buy all new cabinets (obviously) and don't want to buy all new cabinet doors (again, obviously).

One option I was thinking about was to remove the door and stage it as a "display" cabinet with some lighting.  Another idea was to put a door with a glass insert so it looks like it is different on purpose.

Any other suggestions?

I thought about the glass insert also.  If they're the type of cabinets with a framed edge, then you can cut out the thin middle part that is damaged (if that's what's damaged...) and just put some edge brackets on it to hold a pane of glass.

I like the glass insert idea. Depending on the layout of the cabinets, though, it might look better if you did glass doors or open shelving for two of the cabinets, so that it looks symmetrical and deliberate. Also, your tenants might prefer frosted glass, so they can hide their junk!
