Replacing Interior Door
« on: January 21, 2016, 01:46:54 PM »
I need to replace a 29" interior door.  The rough opening is just shy of 31".  I was thinking about installing a pre-hung 28" door since that's a standard size.  What do you think?  With shims is the RO too big for the 28" door?

FYI - the door frame is in fine shape, but between the non-standard size of the frame and the difficultly of hanging the slab, I think I'm more comfortable with the pre-hung door.

Rather than shim the inch difference in the rough opening, I would buy some 1 inch thick material to fill in one side and then fine tune with shims. I think you will end up with a much more solidly mounted door.

Agree with above. Fill in one side with solid material. Also, if the hinge side is perfectly level, then put the solid material on that side and attach the door directly to it with no shims...this ensures that the door is as solidly mounted as possible.

This. Use good plywood.

God I hate hanging doors.

This was the approach that I took in your situation, and it worked out pretty well.

Easy way to get 1" thick:  1 layer of 3/4" ply + 1 layer 1/4" ply ( or luan plywood).

Will your door trim cover the extra space created by using a narrower door frame?

The trim will cover the extra space.

Thanks for the advice everyone!
