Door too short by 2”; what to do?
« on: June 05, 2020, 11:22:12 AM »
My carpenter who installed new doors in my basement cut the new door too short (used old door as guide; there was a subfloor that I ripped out, the old door measured correctly for that, now the floor is lower), and there’s a gap. He’s recommended weather stripping to add another inch. Is this my best option? It’s a 24” wide hollow core door, the gap is around 2” inches, hes told me it needs extending about an inch.

Make your contractor buy a new door. This sounds like their mistake not yours unless your did not inform them you would be modifying the floor.

Make your contractor buy a new door.

This.  A 24" hollow core door will set your contractor back < $100... as little as $35 if he opts to hang it himself (slab only).

It's an easy fix if he goes pre-hung, it's a cheap fix if he goes slab.  Either way it's a reasonable demand.

Just adding - I had a door like this once in a rental and it wound up being a safety hazard.... when people opened it, the door would slide over top of your toes and then take the skin off the top of your foot.  Seriously, a door with a 5” gap would be less hazardous than one with just a 2” (or 1”) gap.  Probably why bathroom stalls always have 8-12” gaps from the floor, not 2”.

The first thing I would try is to get another door put in at the carpenter's expense. But if relationships are such that you don't want to try that route for whatever reason, the alternative would be to glue and screw a piece of wood on the bottom of the door and them buy door kick plates to put on either side to hide the mistake.

In commercial construction we would require a door to a bathroom be under cut 1" to allow the exhaust fan to pull air under the door... but 2" common man, thats a bit of an oversight... I'd make the contractor fix it at his expense.
