Door stopper for outdoor deck door
« on: March 20, 2021, 07:39:23 PM »
My newly built lightweight deck door swings on the hinge, and can injure any unsuspecting person holding the deck rail if it slams too hard against it. To avoid this, I need a door stopper.

I ran to Lowe's and got one of these: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Gatehouse-6-in-Grey-Wedge-Stop/3353194.

How do I attach it to the deck floor made of 2X6 pressure treated lumber?

Considerations:
1. It is outdoor, so any mechanism has to be able to weather the outdoor weather.
2. If/when the rubber disintegrates from U/V radiation in a few years, I would like to cleanly remove it and install another one.

Any other better suggestions how to implement a door stop?

I think that might be the sort of doorstopper that is freefloating and needs to be put in place every time it's used.  A good glue should keep it in the right place to work automatically though.

You could simply drill a small hole near the top of the ramp, add a small washer, and screw it to the deck using a stainless screw. Contact with pt will damage certain metals. Most deck screws are coated with ceramic for this purpose so that works, too, except the head of a deck screw isn't designed to necessarily be used against a washer, it will work.
If the door stop is solid, not hollow, you could attach it to a small piece of wood by putting two small screws through the wood into the back of the stop and then attach the whole thing to the deck.

That item is a wedge designed to jam under a door and hold it open, it's not designed to be permanent mounted.
For doors that swing freely like that they make a chain stop with spring that will keep them from swinging so far.

Thx.

Do you happen to have any link/picture showing the kind of chain stop you are talking about?

I'm a very novice DIY guy, so don't want to make another stupid mistake and get the wrong item once more :-D.

Chain stop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA6jHHVxGfg

I'm not clear about the goal. Are you trying to keep hold the door in the open position, or do you want it to close behind you on it's own? Just trying to keep it from opening too far?

A typical storm door closer would achieve all of those things for you:

Primary goal is to prevent the door from swinging open 180 degrees, slam against the deck rail and potentially cause injury if anyone is holding the deck rail at that location.

The door is level and stays open on it's own wherever we leave it. Closing on it's own would be nice, but not all that necessary either.

I will try out the chain link and storm door closure idea and see if I can get any of those to work.

I'd still lean toward the door closer since it provides more functionality and won't pose a tripping hazard, but if it's going to be mounted in a location with no traffic. There are also these simple, cheap stops:

A storm door hydraulic closer will not prevent a lightweight door from opening too far.   They are made for closing the door, not restricting the opening of it.
On several occasions I've had storm doors with hydraulic closers blow wide open by the wind and bend the heck out of the closer.   The chain stop prevents this.

True. It sounds like the issue is that the door is opening up to 180 degrees currently. The closer alone would limit that to about 90 degrees, but it can be damaged doing such, and can transfer a lot of force to the door frame and rip out screws, etc too. It really needs to be a system of things that work together for an ideal solution, and the closer with a chain stop should return the best situation.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
