Building a bike shed: please help pick a design!
« on: February 16, 2015, 12:08:23 AM »
I own a small townhouse with no garage & a very small yard. There's not much room for bike storage inside, so I'm trying to build a bike storage shed for 3 bikes that works in a limited space. After searching around & trying to figure out what would work best, here are my top two ideas.

#1: Kind of like a trundle bed built into a shed. I would use heavy duty drawer slides to pull out the "trundle" to access the bikes parked inside. Here's a drawing of what it would look like.

#2: Built like a truck bed drawer inside a shed (Like this.). Ideally, there would be an individual drawer for each bike for ease of use, but that might be too much work/money.

Which do you think would work best & would be the better option? Do either of these make sense? If you have tips for construction or ideas of how to make it easier, let me know.

Thanks!!

Why not have three pull out sliding doors, with clips on them for the bikes to attach - close together like they have in door shops? The bikes would be upright and easy to get out. When we were children we had hooks suspended from the ceiling that we hung the front wheel onto. This also took little room.

Hi. I couldn't access your drawing in #1, but I would not want to store bikes flat/horizontal. How much vertical room do you have? Could you build a unit, like a wardrobe, almost as high as two bikes and store them on hooks, two high and the third on a longer hook between the two, total depth of unit 1.5 handlebars wide.

Oh no! I think I described this very poorly. Here is our inspiration & I think this would be approximately the same size as our intended shed. I think tracks like above would be difficult to install & keep clear, so I'm trying to brainstorm different ways to build this concept.
We are planning on paving a spot out front to place a shed against our house & underneath our kitchen window. Our proposed two options for building are:

#1: Having the sliding part come out the wide way, like a trundle bed & unlike our inspiration. The bikes would be stored similarly to the inspiration picture but I plan to install some stands to keep them upright & not leaning on each other. The "trundle"/sliding part would be mounted on heavy duty drawer slides & would be approximately 4' x 6'. I'm a little worried about pulling it out so far that it will sag since we'll have 45+ lbs of bikes in there.

#2: Having the sliding part come out the same way as the inspiration pic (long way). This means the sliding part would have to be pulled out approx. 6 feet, which would make drawer slides difficult. I think installing a track & wheels would be a pain, but I like the idea of having individual drawers for each bike for ease of use instead of one big storage area.

Did that make anything more clear? Unfortunately, we're limited on height because this needs to fit underneath our windows, which are about 4.5 feet off the ground. We thought about doing a basic shed in the same spot, but constantly shuffling three bikes in & out of a small space would drive us all crazy pretty soon.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
