Title: Do it yourself Lawn and pest control
Post by: FastStache on July 08, 2013, 02:36:44 PM
Pest control is the most important one to me at the moment.  I have an infant at home so I'm not sure what is safe to use. I'd like to make sure I kill off spiders and other insects that have made their way into my Florida home.  It's hard to identify spiders but there are widows and brown recluses in the area. What is safe to use?

Second, I have a St. Augustine lawn and would like to kill off the weeds, and there are a lot of them.  Also, I need to water more in the winter since grass needs plenty of water to grow and weeds don't.  What can I use here?

I'm trying to improve this for potential resale value in a Mustachian way.

In regards to your infant the safest thing I can think of is to use glue boards. They aren't as effective as using a spray, but it is safer. I would go check out this page (http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/spiders-c-22.html) for more information on different methods and products you could use for spiders. They also have a lawn and garden section so you might be able to find the answer to your other question there. I hope this helps!

Consider checking out the Permies lawn (http://www.permies.com/forums/f-3/lawn) and bugs (http://www.permies.com/forums/f-67/bugs) subforums.

Just don't do what my wife did to kill an ant pile that was in our lawn. She poured boiling water on the ants, reading that it'd kill the ants. Yes, it did kill the ants, but it also killed our lawn in that area... it'll grow back, but sometimes you need to think through everything before you go with the first thing you find on the internet.
