DIY Point to Point wireless for home
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:04:25 PM »
My home sits too far back off the road (apparently) for reliable DSL service.

My only other options are mobile hotspot (current) which is only 3G 99% of the time or Satellite. Both come with data caps. I work from home in software support, so I need a connection that can handle being on VPN all day long.

I do have a "shed" for lack of a better term, that is down on the road that theoretically I could get DSL installed.

I can see the shed from my house without any major obstructions. It's too far for general wireless access point connection, so I'm thinking I'd need to do a point to point connection up to the house, then get a wireless access point here to cover the house.

When I look up point to point networking all I come up with seems to be expensive super crazy business class stuff.

has anyone ever done a point to point network in a home environment? What kind of equipment/cost am I looking for here?

Thanks!

Also check out the AWUS high-powered USB antenna which has a maximum range of ONE MILE. http://jarspot.com/high-power-internet-antenna/

I own one and am thinking about getting another because it works SO much better than any thing else for connecting to a faraway access point.

I can see the shed from my house

As in--Sarah Palin could see Russia from her porch?

Given the circumstances, you are going to want to spend a little more on rugged, outdoor, business class equipment to do this with to ensure a consistent connection as it'll be rough enough doing a VPN with a DSL connection near the end of the loop. Look into Ubiquiti's NanoBridgeM equipment running in bridged network mode for getting from the shed to the house, specifically with the M2 or M5. The prices are reasonable enough ($160 through Amazon should get you bridged) even for business/enterprise equipment, and UBNT hardware is sort of the poor man's Cisco hardware stack. I run UBNT at my shul, and love the stuff.

Normally, I'm all for DIY approaches, but this particular setup speaks to the axiom of you get what you pay for, and you need something reliable and all-weather.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
