Making clay bricks
« on: August 24, 2015, 01:16:34 PM »
MMM Team, Has anyone tried making their own clay bricks for a small project like paving a front entrance or making an outdoor oven? Would love some practical advice if anyone has tried it and gotten easy sources of clay to use from somewhere (aside from digging up your yard) and how viable this is to do.

Any reason you need clay? With concrete pavers as cheap as they are, I don't think you'd see a ROI in regards to your time.

You can do compressed earth blocks too. It's not super productive in terms of time (I think the best case is saving something like ~$5/hour savings, assuming you already have everything you need and can produce a brick every 4 minutes), but if you want to do it for fun it's definitely something you can look in to.

Can't say much about clay bricks, except that the energy required to fire a small amount would be substantial.

I made some nice artistic pavers out of cement that came out really nice.  With very rudimentary skills you can make concrete bricks of almost any color, texture and shape.  At ~$5 for a 60lb bag you can get a decent ROI if you consider it a 'fun' project and aren't too concerned with your time spent.
