Cracked glass cooktop
« on: August 17, 2021, 10:51:24 AM »
I smashed the edge of the glass cooktop on my induction range. The manufacturer is not making the part anymore so it’s replace the whole freaking thing or find a way to stop the crack from spreading. Right now I’m not worried about electrical issues because it’s on the edge, not by an element.

There are two parts the the crack: a semicircular smashed-up part about 2” across that I think would accept a filler, and a nearly invisible linear crack extending out from it. The linear crack is the big problem.

Ideas that have failed: getting a windshield repair place to fix it (only works on laminated glass); asking appliance repair place if they have any way of obtaining the part that I don’t (no).

My best ideas right now are epoxy filler or heat resistant tape. I’m dubious that either one would stop the hairline crack from spreading.

Any other ideas?

One method for preventing cracks from spreading is to drill a very small hole at the very end of the crack. This rounds the crack off, and essentially cuts off any pathway for it to propagate. From there I suppose you could try your filler.

Fascinating ask. Sorry I don't have any advice but am PTF. We also have an induction stove and would worry about the same thing. Best of luck and keep us posted?

It may not be worth the effort, and depends on how popular that model was -- but if you could find someone selling a broken one for parts on Craigslist you could buy it for cheap, take the part you need and then scrap the remains.

Did you only try the manufacturer for parts?

I've had decent luck finding parts on repairclinic and ereplacementparts, but once the supply is gone the supply is gone. I have gotten luck and found different part numbers that find or worked with a modification, but never something like cooktop glass.

Did you look on ebay for used parts? Finding a used top off a broken stove is probably your best bet.

Yes, the first thing I did was to look at places like repairclinic. I'll try eBay but I'm pretty sure it was purchased in 2012 so that seems like a very remote possibility. Right now I'm thinking I'll just use heat resistant tape and try to make it last as long as possible. Drilling a hole at the end of the crack is a great tip!

I'd recommend putting in a saved search for what you need, and don't be too specific. It's been a while, but I've bought a moisture sensor for a 90's era microwave and original push buttons for a 50's era cooktop on eBay.  People will part out anything.
