Converting 3 cupboards into walk in / stand in wardrobe
« on: January 22, 2020, 02:32:47 PM »
We are thinking of starting a new project in our house to build a tiny walk in wardrobe, out of 3 existing cupboards / wardrobes. Are we crazy to do this?

The idea behind this is that one room could be used as a childrens bedroom, which doesnt need the built in storage, and the wall space could be used for more child friendly furniture, whilst the adults bedroom could benefit from the additional storage, as well as making it more of a master bedroom.

The cupboard space we would not be able to increase downwards, so that would remain uplifted, as the stairs are underneath. We are wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how we can maximise this space, and use it efficiently?

Just looking at things, I'm not sure I would do what you are proposing for a couple reasons. The first is that a walk-in closet 80 cm wide is going to be extremely tight. A typical depth of clothes with hangers is close to half that distance so if you had all your clothes hanging along one wall, you would have to squeeze by along the other wall.  The second reason is that removing a built in closet in a bedroom can decrease the value of a bedroom dramatically.

If I understand things right, the above stairs cupboard is in the kids room and you want more storage in the master bedroom where you can't access that space. It should be a fairly doable project to wall up the door to that space in the kids room and put in a door or pull our drawers on the master bedroom side. That would give you more storage in the master bedroom while still leaving a closet for both rooms.

Personally, closets are generally one of the least well utilized places in a house. The standard closet has a single pole across it where people hang clothes but there is lots of room above and below the clothes that gets inefficiently used. I like installing closet systems similar to the picture below which make the space you do have much more efficient.
