painting wooden "boxes"
« on: June 20, 2014, 01:55:29 PM »
I have a set of 8 wooden cubes about 12" on a side (along with a base) that I've had since I was about 10 years old. My dad built them for me. They make great storage units.  But as you can probably guess, in 40 years they've been banged up a good bit.

So I want to repaint them.  Obviously this will entail some sanding down.  That's not the question.  It's an issue of spray paint vs paintbrush vs some other means of applying new paint.  My neighbor says buy spray paint.  The major advantage of spraypaint is that it's likely to be quicker and easier, especially doing the insides.

Thoughts?

Compared to brushing, spray paint is fast and easy, but trickier to get an even coat.  I personally would actually prefer a brush for the insides--it will be quite difficult to get a good result with a rattle can on the inside of the boxes.

I'd use a semi-gloss enamel and brush paint into the corners with a foam brush, and then roll it on the rest with a small foam roller - that will give you a nice finish without brush strokes.

What horsepoor said. Or brush in the corners and spraycan for the rest.

+1 for the small foam roller. It yields a very even, smooth finish--it's what we used to paint our kitchen cabinets. Spray paint can be unwieldy and it's more difficult to get an even coat of paint. I've spray painted only when angles prevent me from painting with a roller or brush. I've also repainted furniture with just a brush, which works just fine too.

Brush and roller on the outside and don't worry about painting the inside would be my preference.  :P

Brush with the right size of ruler, I think. Or maybe you can try spray paint also.
