Cockroach, cricket, and ant control
« on: June 18, 2016, 07:32:17 PM »
We had Terminix pest control service for a year and I loved it.  No more cockroaches and crickets in the pool, insects in the bathroom, or ant colonies.    The Terminix people would spray the edges of each room (where wall meets wall) inside, spray some stuff down the water service thing on the street, drop granules on the rocks that surround our pool area, and also granules for the ants outdoors.

Accorinding to the report the chemicals used were:
Cy-Kick CS .05% - CYFLUTHRIN 0.05%
Suspend SC .03% - DELTAMETHRIN 0.03%
Tri-Die Bulk Dust -  PYRETHRINS1%,PBO10%,SILICON GEL40%

Anyone know where I can get my hands on the same chemicals to replicate the service myself?

I've been seeing a lot of cockroaches here, which is surprising to me since it's suburbia.  They mostly don't come inside (that I can tell), but I've seen one or two in the garage.   I'm thinking they are a more harmless variety (is there such a thing as non-invasive cockroaches?) because I've seen one every 10 feet on walks at night but zero in our living quarters.  Still, I got some traps.

Highlighting Tri-Die Bulk Dust, then right clicking and selecting "search Google for..." gives https://www.amazon.com/Prescription-Treatment-Tri-Die-8-oz/dp/B0049P7TQU as one result.  Maybe doing the same with the others...?

Ok - face palm.  I thought I had remembered searching previously and I think I searched for the active ingredients rather than the product name.  Anyway, thanks!  At least I have now listed the products for anyone else who wants to DIY this.

We line the outside perimeter of our house with diatomaceous earth http://amzn.to/28WrFf9. It's a white powder, and it stays put because it almost never rains here. It's safe for kids and pets, but scratches the heck out of the skin/shells of bugs and they dehydrate and die. It works amazingly well, and it really minimizes the amount of chemicals we use inside.

For ants specifically, Terro is fantastic. http://amzn.to/28YOh1K

+1

Just be careful not to inhale it because it will scratch the heck out of your lungs as well. :)
I hear you can use it on pets to get rid of fleas, but I've always worried that my cat would sniff at it too much trying to figure out what I've sprinkled on his back.

Lots of companies sell professional-grade pesticides to the general public (try googling "DIY pest control"). I like this one because it has good how-to guides and videos (and also happens to be local to me).

thanks for posting, I've been meaning to try to find something to deal with ants and other household pests!

(I rent, but I don't like running to my landlord for little things I should be able to deal with easily on my own.  You gotta draw the line somewhere.  A previous landlord told me a tenant once called him in to replace a light bulb.  I thought that was ridiculous.)

Another thing I've found helps (but not 100%) - clean. If bugs are attracted to a particular area, clean the heck out of it. No, it's not going to work all the time, but for infrequent or isolated issues, maybe it just means you've been a slob and are paying the price.

Concur with previous poster. Thumbs up for food-grade diatomaceous earth! I got a box from Arbico Organics when the dogs got fleas. Swept it into the floorboards, sprinkled under mattress pads and on upholstry, hoovered it up after 24 hrs. Brushed it into the dogs' fur, no problemo if they ate it (some people put it into dog, horse, etc. food to control worms. Some people even sprinkle it on their cereal cuz they think it helps their digestion!!). We all eat it, actually -- farmers put it in grain bins to kill pests.
I wore a a paper mask whilst sprinkling just in case, and kept away from the doggos' heads so as not to irritate eyes or noses.
I also ordered beneficial nematodes (they come in a little dried cake and you mix them with water to reanimate them) and sprayed them on the yard with a fertilizer hose attachment.
No more fleas, without any sprays, bombs or other chemical stuff.

for cockroaches in basement, boric acid powder is lethal and lasts 10 years of so. Any of the gallon jug stuff at lowes or HD will work fine, Bayer I think is the best, Ortho Home defense is the worst but rotate brands every month or 2 so they do not develop resistance. That is def a DIY thing.

For roaches, I used Combat Source Kill Max and it worked great. We had several places where they would roam. After a couple days I didn't see any for months. Now that it's maybe a year later I'm seeing them again and will reapply. It comes in a tube and squirts out a brown strand. I'm only going to put it inside locked/baby proofed cabinets.

Tempo fan myself. No cockroaches in my area, so not sure how it would fair against them.

I have had very good results with Viper insecticide.  It is a concentrate that you dilute and spray with a pump up garden sprayer.

A pint is about $22 and makes 16 gallons of spray.

I treated my dad's place for roaches and they disappeared after the first treatment.  It's safe for indoor use, but he's old was afraid to use it inside.  I sprayed the entire foundation of his home, under the deck, and around the base of all the trees in his yard.  I think it took about 3-4 gallons of spray, and probably 30-45 minutes.

I have been battling tiny black ants at my house.  I did the same as at my dad's, but also sprayed indoors where I'd seen ants.  The ants were gone,...until we made the mistake of leaving an unfinished desert plate sitting out all night.  They are mostly gone now, but I still have the occasional small battle with them.

Viper is good against 100's of different bugs.  I originally bought it to use against carpenter bees, but it didn't stop them.  Maybe I didn't use enough or applied it wrong.  I'm still looking for something to stop the carpenter bees.

There are many varieties of cockroach, and they don't all like to live in your home.  Usually the one's that you find inside are German cockroaches.

So leave them alone?  I'm crap at identifying them against internet photos.  I just don't want to let my guard down and end up with a  million in the house.  When I go on night walks I stomp em (they congregate near the storm drain)

If you want.

I mean, they're cockroaches . . . they exist outside of the 'all life is precious' sphere for most people.  Just every time that you stomp one remember to carry the carcass home.  A dead cockroach will feed dozens of the ones smart enough to avoid you on your journey.  :P

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
