Closet shelf/organization options?
« on: February 02, 2022, 06:38:33 PM »
Hi,

Pretty standard "entry way" kind of closet. Already has a coat rack.

Looking for some ideas of how to take advantage of the space a bit more and how to do it easily (I'm not much of a DIY person).

Doesn't need to hold a heavy load. It'd be nice if it were not horribly ugly, should we ever sell this place.

Ideas?

The easiest, most basic option is a shelf just above the bar. Get some 1x2, cut to length, screw them into the wall on left, back and right sides, get a piece of wood the appropriate size, put on top of the new supports, and you have a shelf. Will last forever if you get the screws into structure.

What Sibley said. If you want to get a bit fancier, paint the shelf to match the closet wall, or stain it to match the rod.

Even better than one shelf is two.  Unless you plan to store tall things.  You can buy the metal bars with holes in the sides, some brackets and wood shelves and then they’re adjustable to any heights you want.

In addition to the shelf, we have bolted a "broom organizer" on the right wall of our entry closet. It hold broom, Swiffer, Mop, and cobweb duster on a handle. Like this:

For the rod, we bought a hanging "sweater "organizer that is ~ 4.5' tall, and about 12" wide, with fabric shelves suspended every 8" or so. We stash our placemats, tablecloths, napkins in it, since that closet is closest to our Dining Room alcove.

It's not going to win any awards, but it works. Managed to repurpose some particle board from a bookshelf that did not survive the move. Thanks for the suggestions!

We bought a shoe hanger for the back of our bedroom door for our shoes.  Frees up some space on the closet floor for stuff.

Not holding anything heavy?  The cheap white wire shelving will do nicely.  I have a bunch in our house I'm meaning to use in various places, and I picked it up off the curb on trash day one day.
