Central A/C Ducts
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:20:13 PM »
Older home and getting ready to install central system.  No ducts exist.   Two story home.

To heat/cool 2nd floor, duct will run through the first floor, up the walls in the corner of the rooms to the 2nd floor.  I've already talked to hvac pros about placement - they said corners are fine (as opposed to along the wall under a window).  After they install metal ducts, I'd have to box them in with drywall.  They don't use flex ducts in vertical chases.

I'm wondering, to save money, since the ducts would be within the interior of the house, do I need metal ducts?  Can I just box it in with plywood or whatever?  I say whatever because I think the material should be smooth so not to catch/collect dust.

Would that meet code?

The ducts would be much easier to seal, and unsealed airways could lead to pressurization issues where air gets sucked into or pushed out of the outer building walls, leading to inefficient HVAC.

Here's a possibly helpful link from the Building Science Corporation, and here's another.
