Caulk Removal
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:22:49 AM »
So, after 8 years of living in the house..  Decided to remove the caulk/silicone from the showers/baths and re-do.

I've tried a razor blade (either I'm not getting deep enough or the blade is dull or it just isn't working) and some of the plastic caulk removal.

Both failed miserably.

Any other suggestions?  Seems all the sites I find say use one of those two methods.

Thanks.

It might not be just caulk in the joint, could be grout as well, which will require a grout removal tool.  PITA.

I have the same issue, I think it's caulk around the border of the shower, but there is something a lot harder inbetween the plastic layers (seems like it's the equivalent of a bath-fitter style piece on the wall.  I had tried removing it with my utility blade, but it wasn't effective.

I'd like to know if you make any progress with this!

I had the best results when I sprayed down the bathtub joint with a spraypaint removing spray from Home Dip, because I also had a few areas in the tub that had white spray paint applied to them.  Really loosened the caulk up so I could pry it loose neatly.

This is my favorite tool for caulk (adding and removing) - takes care of 95% of the job.

There must have been 10 layers of caulk.. it was a nightmare.  Even with a window scraper (read: razor blade with handle).

I couldn't remove all of it even with a bunch of elbow grease.   I spent an hour and a half this morning and just got the inside base of our shower down (3x3 shower - very small).  I think whoever did it before never removed the older caulk.

Ugh.
