Caulk removal tips?
« on: April 08, 2014, 01:18:26 PM »
Any hidden tips or tricks for removing caulk in a shower stall?   I have tried razor blade, caulk removal tool from home depot, spatula and screwdriver.  I dont want to scratch my pan and wall.  I used dap caulk no silicone dont know if that makes a difference.

Putty knife.

A hairdryer can help as well.

Slice it along the tile and along the pan with a utility knife. Once you break the bond, it should mostly pull up. I use a window scraper razor blade to clean up the residue.

It's not the safest thing to do, but a rag soaked in Coleman lantern fuel, left to soak on top of old caulk will remove silicone very effectively. I once removed dozens of feet of old caulk joints from a cheap, used pop camper. It works amazingly well. I don't know if it works as well on other types of caulk.

I often use an oscillating saw with the scraper attachment (not the blade) to remove stubborn caulk. You still have to he careful with it.

I haven't tried it yet, but read not too long ago of someone who had good results with placing paper towels soaked in rubbing alcohol on the old caulk overnight.  She also said she got a good result applying the new caulk by using two strips of painter's tape on either side of her intended caulk line before applying it.

This is all good information, but why are you both commenting on a thread that's 8 years old?

Ha, did not notice that, but surely someone's tub is due for re-caulking!

Well, after 8 years it’s time to re-caulk.  Maybe they forgot how they did it 8 years ago…

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
