Fridge help - water dripping
« on: October 04, 2015, 10:29:46 AM »
Want to run this by some sensible people, because my roommate does not qualify.

We have a Kenmore side by side fridge/freezer. It's got in-door water and ice, the water lines aren't hooked up so only the ice dispenser is usable. There is a small plastic pipe on the back of the fridge, and it's dripping water. This is recent, and no other problems.

My assumption is that something got iced up, and thus condensation is coming out that pipe. So, if we pull everything out and turn it off, it should melt and clear out. Do we need to do both the fridge and freezer? Just the freezer? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Does the little plastic pipe look like a drip drain?

Frost free refrigerators will often have a little drip hose that drips into a drip pan.  If this is the case, it's working as designed.  It drips into a pan, where it evaporates.

It does look like a drip drain, except it's hanging out in mid air, about halfway up the side of the fridge.

In addition, we can't move the fridge - too heavy for us, and the front has dipped down a tad into the very poorly placed air vent.

I'm no expert here.... but I wonder if it used to have a longer bit of flexible hose that directed the drips into a drip pan.

Well, the fridge hasn't been moved or messed with since we moved in over a year ago. Which is why I'm thinking something got iced up. Do fridges have secondary drip lines for when the line to the drip pan is clogged?

Well, after my roommate had a meltdown... the freezer is empty and turned off to melt. There is some visible ice where it shouldn't be, so hoping that melting it will take care the problem.

Iced up you say?        Let me stop you right there.  Is this fridge over 5 years old? If so I imagine your condensation drain line might be clogged up.   There is a little P trap that is notorious for clogging and then the water backs up and freezes in your freezer. Since it freezes over the drain line the cycle becomes viscious lol and when the water melts it goes places it shouldn't since the drain is clogged.

Just throwing it out there.

It's not that old. It's all fixed now though, so very happy about that!
