Can I install (and how?) a portable AC with a tilt window?
« on: July 06, 2014, 04:35:24 PM »
It's about to get hot here where I live, and me and my wife have decided to try an AC unit for the first time in our lives. New ones are quite pricey, but I can get some used noname brands for less than $150. However we don't want any major construction work in our apartment, so I'm rather looking at the portable ones, not the permanently-installable ones.

The problem is - our apartment, like all others around here, have a tilt-and-turn type of window. I understand that in the US/Canada it's more popular to have slide windows, so for those of you who don't know what it is - here's a picture I found on Google. Basically I can open any window either fully sidewise, or in a small gap upwards.

So my question is - will it work if I simply hang the exhaust pipe out the window? Or will that just make all the hot air come right back in again? Any tricks I can use?

Look up installing portable A/C in casement windows.  I saw a few youtube links and such.  You do want to seal around the hose.

OK, thanks, googling for "casement windows" gave me a lot more than "tilt windows". :) OK, I see the idea. It's a bit of work, but doable, I guess. I'll try to come up with something that works for my own windows.

Two alternate suggestions...
1. Look up solar chimney for utility free venting.  You can make these yourself.  The ones for retrofit over existing windows apparently are great as they also block the sun from entering your room.  But you can't see out of that window.  You need to put them in your sunn window and taller chimneysnwith greater her differential work best.  Basically they use the heat of  the sun to drive natural ventilation.  A passive house technique.  Very cool.

2.  If you want to spend mone, try a second hand portable a/c first?  You move it to right beside you when hot and don't need to cool the whole house or room, just have cooler air blowing at you when needed.

I don't know if these would suit you, but if you don't have a/c now, maybe not a bit stretch..  Good luck!
