DIY Tailoring?

Hey all,
Anyone have any good resources on learning how to tailor suits on your own? Mostly waist in the pants and jacket.
Bought a machine washable one where the length is good but as you get longer they think I am a fat man.

I just take mine to a local seamstress who does a suit for about $30. It isn't worth it to me to have to own and store a sewing machine to save that much money.

Most dry cleaners can do simple alterations as well.
