Building a bike rack in the yard?
« on: May 30, 2017, 10:26:21 AM »
Hello everybody,

I am new here and this is my first post. I tried searching for this first before creating a new post. I am looking for suggestions on a cheap DIY bike rack we can build for our back patio.

Much appreciated.

I don't think I'd want to keep my bikes outside, rain/snow etc is bad for them and I'd also be worried about theft.  But for the "rack" I have in my shed, I just screwed big hooks to a 2x4 about a foot apart and then screwed that 2x4 to the studs in the shed.  I then just put the wheel on the hook and the bike hangs vertically.

How many bikes?  Do they have to be locked securely, or is the rack just to hold them up?

Find free pallet.

Sand and paint pallet. [edit-don't sand]

Lean up against wall and put bike tire between slats.

Cheap, easy, and works.

Sand and paint pallet.

With the caveat that sanding a pallet treated with Methyl Bromide may not be the best long term decision. Heat treated, kiln dried, and debarked I like pallets prepared with those treatments. I'd prefer not breathe sawdust from a MB treated pallet.

Thank you, everyone.

It needs to lock two bikes securely for daytime storage between trips -- but not for overnight storage outside.

You can use galvanized pipe to create either a rail or a couple of u-shaped bends, attached to the wall, for you to secure/lock your bike to.

Very easy and fast to do, reasonable pricewise and decent theft protection.

I built one out of 2" pvc.  Wasn't the cheapest but holds bikes in upright position and I already had a lot of the parts.

I've also contemplated a way to store my bike, when it was in the garage (admittedly took up needed space) I rode it more. My wife put it in our shed, which is behind a locked gate, it is no long convenient to walk out the door and hop on my bike.
I'd like to build a covered rack to store one bike for my backyard.
Not sure about what design I'd make.
Could be skinned with corrugated metal. Hmm, 7 or 8 panels at $10ea.
already $80 and haven't built the frame.
Maybe I need a solution in the garage. :-)

I've played the outdoors / shed / garage game before.  You want it in the garage, even if you have to hang it up it still beats the other solutions...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
