Broken snap on bike trailer
« on: September 10, 2014, 01:52:27 PM »
The metal snap holding closed the cargo compartment on my antique Burley trailer broke today. The top part sort of broke off and stuck to the bottom part. The top part is accessible from both sides, but the bottom is not (it's on a part that is sewn in). Fortunately, its not a safety issue, but I'm afraid my crap will fall out the back!

Does anyone know if these snaps are replaceable? I don't even know what these industrial-type snaps are called.

Thank you! OK, I'm on the right track now.

Dumb question: Do they come in standard sizes? Would I be able to replace just the top snap while leaving the bottom one screwed in? And don't I need special pliers or something to replace a snap?

i believe they are pretty much standard, but i can't guarantee that. If you get a kit like this, it comes with a tool you can use to install the snap and it comes with both sides, in case the replacement doesn't fit the button that is on the trailer. I have used this tool, you also need a hammer to set the button with the press that this comes with.

you can also get this set of plier that come with the replacement snaps also. Might be easier then trying to use a hammer. But this set is for fabric on both sides, so it does not come with the screw in type

I am sure you can find a youtube video on how to use both tools.

Good luck!

After checking with Freecycle, I ordered a smaller version of the SeaSense kit (the larger one was out of stock) because I thought I should have some screw-in ones on hand just in case. It should be here Thursday--wish me luck!

Done! It was actually extremely satisfying to use the press tool with a hammer and the tiny "anvil." Didn't come with instructions, but that's what the Internet is for. Fit easily with the male part, too, so no need to replace that. We're back in business! Thanks so much for the help, everyone!
