Blown head gasket?
« on: January 28, 2016, 02:45:18 PM »
Hey guys,

My buddy has his car in the shop now for what sounds like a blown head gasket. His mechanic is quoting him $1300 or so. It's a 2008 Civic *I think*. Is that a pretty fair estimate? Or should he shop around? Is this a viable DIY project for someone who has never done car repair work before?

Sounds reasonable. Not a good project to cut your car repair teeth on though.

Make sure they're also replacing the water pump and timing belt while they have all that apart.

The other option I was suggesting to him was checking around to see if any of the local community colleges have an auto shop that might be able to take it on as a 'class project' at reduced cost or something. Though, not sure how much it would end up being at the end of the day...

Yeah that sounds about right to me too. If it truly is only a 2008 and has low miles I would try to see if it could be covered under warranty. Also, some dealerships can comp. certain repairs up to a limit each month. If its on the lower end of miles where head gaskets shouldn't have gone yet then it might be worth pursuing this angle.

Agree on the water pump and timing belt to be replaced at the same time. That's what my mechanic said and did on my car

Head gaskets can fail as a result of overheating, so your friend should be sure the quote involves determining if anything is wrong with the cooling system.

Add in the cost of a radiator, hoses, miscellaneous sensors, etc., and the cost of repairs could balloon.

Agree with others that it's not a good first-time DIY job -- but it could be an excellent thing to assist with if you have friends with mechanical aptitude.

The head gasket itself is inexpensive.

That sounds reasonable considering that most of the money is in labor and not parts. Its not a small undertaking especially with those cars. I am a tech at a honda center myself, I agree 100% with the timing belt and water pump, the only time you know a belt is bad is when its too late. In terms of book time when you add in the water pump/timing belt its not that much more because you are already removing the parts to begin with. I do not recommend taking the car to a community college though, as this job requires that the camshafts and timing gears stay locked in sync otherwise you take the chance of bending valves.
Being a 2008 if he has never had overheating problems it could be a problem with the antifreeze and if he is changing it at the intervals, kind of rare and not normally an issue but the antifreeze that Honda uses is spec'd at 5 years/60,000 miles, even though civic manuals say 120,000. To test a head gasket, the mechanic will usually start the system, get it hot, then connect a hourglass like tool to the radiator where the cap goes, It has blue dye in it that reacts with flammables in the antifreeze, changing the color of the dye. The system is under pressure when this happens so usually at that point the radiator is usually checked.
Good luck to you and your buddies ride, they are tanks when properly maintained and I have seen them with  300k+ miles (not the best lookers/smellers but gets the job done).

That's $400 to $500 higher than I would pay, but we are in an extreme low cost of living area. If you're in the city, that's probably about right. Make sure that covers looking into causes as well or it will just happen again.

He's located in LA (Lakewood, CA to be exact). I wouldn't call it a LCOL area by any means.

Yep, that's reasonable.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
