USB Drives no longer reading
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:57:33 PM »
Hi everybody,
I own a Early 2009 build MacBook running OSX. Both USB drives are failing to read my USB flash drives. I can still print fine to a printer using a USB cable. I have had difficulty for a while backing up to an external hard drive that uses a USB for a power source. What is causing this problem? I have no prior computer repair experience. Can I fix it myself? What tools will I need? Thanks!

Try Googling the problem.  If it's happened before it's on a message board or blog somewhere in my experience.  Often Apple's own.

Macs are a bit like AK-47s.  They're incredibly reliable but when something finally does go bad it takes a bit more to get them on track than a reboot.

Good luck!

I've used this site for home repairs of my MBP:
https://www.ifixit.com/

You'll want to peruse the repair guides and parts availability for your specific model.  If you've never done any mac repair, it will be a steep learning curve, and there are some special tools needed.

It's likely either the USB port or the port's connection to the board is bad or loose.  Replacements may not be available.  I've used http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ for parts and also repair guides as well.

Good luck!

It's often dust crammed in the deep in the USB socket or (sometime) inside the flash drive socket.  (I've seen pocket lint packed hard inside those suckers.)  Usually tweezers or a pin will get out huge chunks of dust, but you should also blow them out occasionally using a can of compressed air.

This sounds like a power issue given the only USB devices that are failing to operate are all devices that require the USB port to power the device for operation in the first place.

The first question to ask is whether this happens only on battery, only on power brick, or on both? If you can isolate the problem down to a specific power source, then it's possible the power source in question is on the verge of failing and is contributing to the problem at hand. Once you do that, the fix becomes as simple as replacing the part, either the battery or the power supply.

If it happens with both power sources independently and used together at the same time, there may be a more serious issue with the laptop's motherboard itself. One point of concern that I have is if the system is incapable of fully providing power to the USB port, it may be underpowering other devices as well, such as the hard drive, which can potentially lead to data corruption and loss. If it falls into this category, it's going to be a lot more difficult to track down and fix... however, as a short term gap until it starts to break hard, you could always utilize a powered USB hub for devices requiring power to operate (such as thumb drives and external hard drives that pull power from the USB bus).

That should get you started with the obvious stuff. Best of luck!

Hi IP Daley,
The battery on my MacBook is pretty dead. The flash drives do not work with the power brick. It is about 1.5 years old. How can I test if the brick is failing?

Also if the motherboard is dying, does that mean the computer itself is dying?

Last question answered first: Yes, if the mobo is shot, the computer is pretty well shot.

Good news, though, I'm pretty sure you're just having power supply issues. Normally, you'd try and get voltage readings off the thing (if you know how to do that sort of thing), but here's what I'd recommend you do: go to your nearest Apple Store with the laptop and ask if you can try your laptop with another power supply. If the laptop works and you can read USB drives, there's your fix. Apple branded replacement supplies can run $60+ (even used run pricey), but aftermarket can usually be had for under $20... just try and stick with well reviewed products from well rated suppliers (like on Amazon or Ebay - just spend the time to research).

Who knows, it's possible your battery's problems might be partially related to the power supply. That said, it may need to be replaced as well. Make sure a new/different power supply gets you operational first, though. If you're looking for another battery and it's not user removable, check out the iFixit link up a couple posts from Greg.

Hi IP,
Thanks for your recommendations. This is really helpful information. I am glad to hear that I can get a few more months out of my MacBook :)

Glad to help, but let's do be realistic about it... it's at best an educated guess until you actually confirm/eliminate the power brick by using a known good. Don't thank me for "several more months" out of your Macbook until you're certain those months can be had. :)

It couldn't hurt to lightly polish the 4 pins inside the USB port.  If there's corrosion, you could easily be seeing the effects you describe.  This comes from several years of having laptops in the hands of our field service workers.  I keep a pack of emery boards on hand just for that task.

After you LIGHTLY file those contacts, I would vacuum the port out OR swab it with an alcohol dampened cotton swab.

We can't rule out a possible software malfunction on the OS.  I have had a few Linux machines that spontaneously decided not to auto-mount anything anymore.
