Beadboard ceiling in basement?
« on: December 31, 2014, 07:28:57 AM »
Anyone have experience installing a beadboard ceiling in an unfinished basement? Due to a water pipe leak, we removed some old ceiling tiles that were screwed to furring strips, and now we are looking for something nice and inexpensive to cover the area. Is using regular 4x8 beadboard wall panels asking for problems, such as warping, etc.? The idea was to use screws to attach the beadboard so that they could be removed, if necessary. We're aware of beadboard ceiling planks, but they appear to be tongue-and-groove and wouldn't be easily removable from any given spot.

Any other ideas for finishing an open basement ceiling? We don't have enough clearance to install a drop ceiling.

Depends of course... many beadboard products are very thin, and could warp or droop.  If it were me and I was looking for a nice surface, I would use something a little thicker, like 3/8" minimum.  A smooth plain surface could be easier to clean and will certainly be easier to paint.

Greg is right, a thin <3/8" panel will sag, and look like shit, as will anything full of exposed screws. I don't have a great answer for you, but anything that blocks access will come back to plague you later. As much as drop ceilings are less than attractive, this is a perfect application for them.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
