Asbestos tape encapsulation
« on: August 22, 2019, 01:22:47 AM »
I have old, white tape on my HVAC ducts that I'm assuming contains asbestos (untested). In most areas the tape is in good condition. I would like to deal with this while also properly sealing my ducts for better efficiency. Should I:

Cover the asbestos tape with silver foil tape?
Cover the asbestos with mastic?

I'd be using mastic, whether you intend removing it later or not.  Asbestos is essentially only dangerous when it can get into the air.  If it is bonded safely, either by painting a flat sheet, or using a bonding agent such as mastic, then the danger is effectively zero.

However, I would also investigate getting it removed.  Longer term it will be a cost, either to you or someone else, who will factor in that cost when buying your house.

I too would cover it with mastic. Less chance of disturbing it than applying foil tape. I certainly wouldn't pay to remove it just because it is dangerous if disturbed. It is completely safe when covered in mastic and effectively sealed. I would use the money not spent abating for other home projects like better insulation, more efficient appliances, etc.

Asbestos is one of the most over exaggerated dangers out there.   As others have said, it's only dangerous if you breath in dust particles from it.
Wear a respirator and remove it.   Wet it down with a spray bottle if it looks like it's creating airborne dust.   If it's in your home, it's your business, don't get a professional involved.
