area rug binding is coming off
« on: September 13, 2012, 10:39:50 AM »
Hi all,

Back in 1999 I hauled myself over to the carpet remnants shop and had them bind up area rugs for my new apartment. We like them a lot, and still use all of them. However, the edge binding on the one in our bedroom is coming off in a particular spot, about 7 1/2" long. I called two different carpet guys (one professional, one local freelance handyman type) and both said they'll have to pick up the carpet and rebind the whole thing - for $300. Anyone have suggestions about how we could fix it ourselves? unfortunately, the way the room is set up + rug dimensions means I can't just turn it around and hide it under the bed!

Thanks!

If it is not to big of an area then get out a needle and some thread and do it by hand.  Also, a hot glue gun can be used to keep it from undoing further.

I second the glue gun approach if you have one.  Have you called this place http://www.bettercarpetwarehouse.com/ I got my remnant there and they did the binding for free. It took about 5 minutes. If you can take the rug there they may be able to do it for much less than $300.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
