Anyone done this? DIY Toilet Sink
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:30:33 AM »
I saw a photo of a manufactured Toilet Sink, briefly wondered if it was real and looked it up. Found this guy had made a DIY video already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioSKrRGx03o

I'm thinking I could set this up fairly easily. Even though it's only the cold water feed the pipes are not insulated up that far in the house so it would be room temp water.

I haven't done it, but I've seen them before (and think they're a great idea).  Regarding hot water, from a scientific perspective it's only slightly more effective than cold water at killing bacteria.  Using cold/room-temperature water is perfectly fine.

Cool idea but unless you are both washing your hands and flushing a lot, not worth the effort.    Here is a water conservation trick for no cost  -- "when its brown, flush it down.   When its yellow, let it mellow."  This will cut your flushing dramatically.

If your interested in a no water toilet,  you might look into the humanure system.  (google it).   Basically a toilet seat on top of a 5 gallon bucket with cedar saw dust in the bucket.  After you do your business simply ad a layer of saw dust.   Once it is full you take it to the compost pile.   No water and great free fertilizer.

I've got five kids and a pregnant wife.  Believe me, one (or three) of these could significantly reduce my water bill :).  Plus, it would be a built-in reminder to everyone to wash their hands after using the toilet.

No, I haven't, but it's worth a think on. I just read this article reiterating how wasteful our modern western bathrooms are yesterday - big plug for composting toilets:

Thought I remembered seeing something like that on This Old House. Took a little digging bit I found it:

We have one, but it wasn't DIY - works well though!

Yep, had to do it when the well was running dry...  I kept small squirt bottles of bleach nearby, and just a very small squirt kept things from getting smelly/cloudy for a very long time.  Seems gross, but really no other alternative, and I continue to do it...  Americans waste an INSANE amount of water. and I try not to be a part of the problem...  Oh yeah, best thing for the bathroom I have ever gotten was a shower cut-off...  So great to lather up, shave, whatever with the water at the same temp off, and just dial on and off, adjust flow, etc.  Absolutely fantastic, and saves enormous amounts of H2O, while greatly increasing enjoyment.  Curved shower rod might tie the shut-off for gotta haves...  Makes such a crazy positive.

Huh, I might have to consider this when remodeling, though of course I'm plumbed for a standard sink setup already.

Years ago I posted a picture of my bathroom sink on Facebook (with no modifications) with the caption "Eureeka!  I invented a combination urinal/sink.  Works great!"

I have a rental with a 2nd bathroom that is tight.  It also is the entrance for the stairs to the basement.  The current sink is a little big and gets in the way of going down the steps.  This might be the fix.  Sent it to the wife to see what she thinks.  I am plumbed for a traditional set up in my home as well don't think I will be doing so for us.  But in tight spaces I like it.
