is it necessary to put teflon tape on the threads of this faucet? I am trying to connnect that copper piece to the threads on the faucet here in the picture:

Not a plumber, but yes I would. Should help prevent leaking. I just put Teflon tape on a few different ends of pipes /connections for a new shower head yesterday (the old one leaked a bit). Three showers in and not leaking.

Are both tapered pipe thread?  If so, 3 wraps of white teflon tape will work.  If the part on the faucet isn't tapered pipe thread, it won't seal, you will need a faucet flex line (similar to toilet supply hose) with a compression ring/washer and fitting.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
