My kids have a 12"x12" concrete patio paver for their school, that they are to decorate with paint (or however they want) and place in their school (it will go near a tree they will plant/adopt this weekend). I'm looking for advice for what kind of paint to use. It's a regular old concrete paver, somewhat rough and porous (not smooth like a garage floor). I know that a) concrete doesn't like to take paint well; b) it transmits up moisture from the ground; c) there are some environmental considerations that will affect the life of the paint. They want to paint a simple design, probably some handprints and write their names.
My searches for "concrete paint" mostly turn up instructions that I'd use for a large scale job like epoxying my garage - you know, muriatic acid etch, all that kind of stuff. I'm just looking for some paint that can be used to make a small arts/crafts type project on concrete, that will hold up to the elements.
Considerations: We live in southern AZ, so it will be beaten on by hard sun 340 days of the year, then for 3 months of the year it will be drenched in monsoon downpours. I'm willing to bet some kind of concrete sealer topcoat is also appropriate.
What advice from the esteemed assembly?
