Re-Stretch Carpet - DIY or Hire Someone
« on: March 06, 2021, 10:43:51 AM »
Carpets in room is starting to bulk up at the corners. As I understand, this happens to all carpets over time. It looks pretty easy on YouTube using a knee kicker carpet stretcher. However most people that I've asked about this tell me that its very tough to get it right for a long term solution.

Has anybody done this before? Recommend hire out this job vs DIY?

I'm not that great at fixing house problems, OK with novice stuff.

The more traffic and the more public the area the carpet is in (hall, sitting room) and the more life the carpet has left in it the more I'd be inclined to get someone to do the job.  If it's in a rarely used spare bedroom then have a go.

I'd look for a local independent (freelance) carpet fitter as they could probably do a good job in very little time at all.  Don't go through a place that sells carpets, the cost would be higher.  Alternatively look at several different YouTube videos for different methods and hire (buy if you have to) the right tool - this is the sort of job that needs the right sort of tool to get a good result.

In the rental property I have I have our carpet cleaning company stretch carpet if the unit calls for it.  If you have a carpet cleaning company ask them if they do it.  It will probably be the only time you need to stretch it before you someday replace it.  Not all carpet needs to be stretched, and definitely not on a regular basis, so I wouldn't bother investing in a knee kicker for this one project, but if you have one or can borrow one you won't hurt anything by giving it a shot.
