Changing dimmer switches to standard on/off switches
« on: May 28, 2013, 04:06:21 PM »
Hello all, when I purchased my condo the previous owner had installed all dimmer switches in every room, except the kitchen.  I find them annoying and it limits the kind of lightbulbs I can use.  I have watched some youtubes of changing out these switches, but I would like more reassurances that I won't/probably won't fry myself if I turn off the power at the main breaker and take apart these things.  I purchased the switches already but am nervous.  Any words of wisdom from the community?  Thanks!

Or, if I should just leave everything as it is and return what I bought to the Homedip, please let me know that too!

To avoid a shock, turn on the light and flip the breaker you think feeds power to that switch. Do not proceed until you find the actual breaker that turns off the light. Once the light goes out, you can safely remove the wall plate, unscrew the switch and pull it out of the wall box. Disconnect the wires and connect them to the proper terminals on your new switch. Carefully fold/push the wires back into the wall box and screw-in the switch. Reset the breaker and test out the switch. Reinstall the wall plate. Done.

This is a no-brainer, and one of the easiest DIY things that you can do.  Turn off the breaker to your switch . . . unscrew the face plate and pull the dimmer out of the wall.  Detach the black wire from the dimmer.  Connect the black wire of your new switch.  Detach the white wire of the dimmer.  Connect the white wire of your new switch.  Jam everything back into the hole (don't let any bare wires touch the sides of your electrical box).  Flip on the power, test the switch.

Might take you 20 minutes if you're really methodical about it.

The only gotcha not mentioned:  You'll need to replace them with the same style switch.  I.e., 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, etc.

Some of the newer dimmers can do either 2-way or 3-way... so you'll need to understand which style you need and you'll need to know which wire is the "line side" to hook the replacement up.
