Suze Orman and What Everybody Is Getting Wrong About FIRE

(1/2) > >>

Surprised there isn't already a thread on this. I saw the story first on Paula Pant's blog, then Market Watch, then here: https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2018/10/05/the-fire-movement/

I started reading through Paula Pant's transcript of the interview via PDF and so far the key takeaway for me has been; 'Suze lives in an alternate universe. It's like she lives on a different planet than I do.'

She claims that 80k a year isn't enough to retire on. I don't make 80k a year now, working full time. She said a couple times "80k pre-tax". I guess it's been a few decades since her income was below that number; as most here are fully aware a couple married filing jointly can make 72k in long term gains tax free. 80k pre-tax is basically the same thing as 80k post-tax.

That's as far as I've bothered to read into it so far, but her grasp of US tax law seems rather weak. Her grasp of life for average joes seems non-existent.

See Suze Orman hates FIRE.

Bayou Dweller:
I don't think anyone should be surprised by her reaction to this.

Even MMM said in the comments that him and his FIRE-blogging friends weren't. They just decided to capitalize on her tantrum to reach a wider audience.

reeshau:
Suze has since softened her tone a bit.
