To carry on this blog conversation...

Is there really no certification or anything necessary to be a welder?  Like specifically if you wanted to make it into a paying hobby?  I am intrigued.

What are some other examples of projects you could do around the house if you know how to weld?  I imagine for hobby bang for the buck you'd want to start with something like carpentry or woodworking, but still...

There are certifications available but they are not required to purchase equipment or supplies or to engage in welding as a business.  Some clients, inspectors and insurance carriers may be interested in proof of various certifications if they have to be involved in your project.  Otherwise its all about knowing the limits of your skill and knowledge and not getting anyone hurt.

The one thing MMM didn't say in his post is that quality welding education is widely and cheaply available at community colleges everywhere.  I would also recommend the  textbook from my cc class.

Secret doors hidden behind bookcases typically require welded metal frames to support the weight of the books.  This would be my first project.
