Get Your Shit Together
« on: March 19, 2014, 11:39:31 AM »
I love this most recent blog post by good ol' MMM. I have been thinking a lot about how life is not a contest and have happily stepped off of the Hamster Wheel of Busyness.

What did you think about it?

The title reminded me of http://getyourshittogether.org/ (not necessarily related).

As for the message - that's actually been on my mind a lot lately, as I recently started working on a master's degree for the fun of it. I'm slowly heading towards the conclusion that I should only take one class at a time because taking two this semester has been too busy, and there's not likely to be any career benefit from it.

Alot of what he was saying has been in many of the books I have come to read things to the MMM forum. Most recently finishing this morning  " Stop acting rich" By Thomas Stanley. Its very hard for people that have lived the "High life" do back down and get there shit together. Better now than later!

Thought it was a great piece he wrote!

Do you recommend that book? If so, I'll add it to my growing list of books I want to read.

Speaking of which, I am looking forward to reading books. How simple is that? Love it.

It was a good read. I would recommend it. The middle of the book is mostly comparisons  about what the wanna be rich buy and the real millionaires . I really liked the beginning and the last couple chapters. Easy read , I read in a day and a morning.

I'm giving this book a go now based on your recommendation. It is interesting seeing how some people really spend a lot of money but they can afford it. I don't know if I would be comfortable spending that much money even if I had it.

I've been trying to be less busy for years. Hard as a single mum, but I really try to simplify and not get caught up doing stuff just because  its there, expected etc.  Living simply takes longer than rushing round grabbing stuff hither and thither,  but it really feels so good.  I look forward to a day at home pottering, reading etc.

I don't know, I found this one too optimistic to be rooted in reality.  For example:
Quote
You start off young, bright, and hardworking. This means you run with a crowd of similar people. For you, jobs have never been hard to come by – the real challenge is just making sure you select the best job. Big incomes come naturally to everyone you know, and this leads to a pleasant ongoing party of a life.

The first two sentences are true, but among the people I know my age, most have spent at least 4 years of their adult life completely unemployed, most of them are working minimum wage service jobs, most are in student debt up to their eyeballs (nothing more fun than majoring in chemistry to become a bank teller...), many are on anti-depressants.

I'm not saying life isn't good or anything, since you tend to oscillate between good times and bad and it's all just part of the show, but I just couldn't help but laugh at this one, a bit of tilting at windmills here.

I couldn't help but wonder if this blog post was inspired by a recent long running thread about high earning + high expenses to keep the high lifestyle.

Yeah, I'm with oldtoyota--hoppin' off the hamster wheel of busy-ness. And I'm adopting the MMM goals of waking up, having a great time, and going to bed happier than when I woke up. I was kind of sort of vaguely doing it anyway--or trying to--but now I've pulled my stuff together with much more clarity and focus.

This wasn't that far fetched a generation ago. As long as you majored in something practical, bright and hard working generally meant having at least a few career job offerings to choose from. Sadly, things have gone to hell in the past decade or two, and your generation is bearing the brunt of it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
