Question about motor vehicle expenses
« on: February 28, 2019, 12:08:00 PM »
Hi,

My wife works as a security guard but her position also requires specialized skills (she's a paramedic).  As such, she always works out of the same location (which is about a 60km drive from her employer's office / approximately same from our home).  She drives her own vehicle every day to the site but does not use her vehicle once she arrives.  Her co-workers (same work situation) say that they claim mileage on T777 for their drive to work.  If her employer is willing to sign a T2200 declaration of conditions of employment, which I assume they are doing for the other employees, do you think this is a reasonable expense to claim or have her coworkers just been lucky?  Side note, the employer probably signs this for every employee because most of their employees would be eligible as they would be driving to different locations regularly with their own vehicles.

I don’t really know if you can.

But I’ll post this to “bump” it.

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-229-other-employment-expenses/salaried-employees/allowable-motor-vehicle-expenses.html

If her employer fills in the paperwork listed in point 4 she might be ok.

But most people can’t deduct driving to work. “The CRA considers driving back and forth between home and work as personal use.”

Driving to and from work is not deductible.

When I had to drive to things once I was at work, my employer reimbursed me mileage, so my driving was not a deduction.  The mileage wasn't income either, it was just a reimbursement of expenses.

The home office would need to be her primary place of work.  Driving from this office to an alternate place(s) of employment is dedcutible.  Driving to/from work i(commuting) s not.

Note, when we have project employees, who may work out of a different client locaton for 6 months at a time, full time on a daily basis, they do not claim mileage deductions.  If needed, we pay them a small upfront bonus to cover their additional costs because the new "primary office location" is the new project office.    Project employees that drive from our home office, to site, once a week, do claim mileage.
