For those who are concerned with Rainbow Lake, I spoke with Paul today and he tells me the camp has been closed to everyone (including him - he's working from home) and that their staff haven't been able to do any engagements with teh kids they serve at all. It's a hard time to be a cancer kid I guess.

With all the lost bookings, the camp is relying on donations from their supporters to cover operating expenses until they can once again offer programming and rentals, but so far, everyone is still working and doing their best to keep things running. Paul sounds upbeat, but concerned for the camp, for the kids, and for his partner and himself.

If you want to support Camp Trillium, you can do that here: https://camptrillium.com/ - they have a donation spot on the bottom of the page.

Well, we look as if we're not going to be able to travel internationally until next year. Also, if we travel to North America, we need travel insurance, which won't appear until next year as Canada and the US are usually on the same health plan for travel insurance from here. So CM*TO appears doomed for us! If it has a virtual session, then I will be ecstatic!

For anyone who's curious...

CIBC's name in the stock exchange is CM.TO

This seems like a conspiracy theory in the making.

Is Fish actually the CEO of CIBC?

Is CM*TO just a front for the banking industry?

YOU MUST COME TO THE NEXT ONE TO FIND OUT.

Hi Everyone!

If you were curious, we are still reaching our camp kiddos and their families... Just a bit differently than usual. Never in all my years would I have thought a virtual campfire would be a thing, let alone be the best part of the day for so many of our campers.

Just wanted to say a quick hello and send out some positive vibes!

Stay safe and keep smiling!

Please see post 1 in this thread. It has been updated with COVID info:

COVID-19 UPDATE#2 - July 16, 2020

Hello everyone. I just got off the phone with the grand poo-bah of the facility we rent for CM*TO. He tells me that the ongoing COVID situation has forced the closure of the facility right through the fall. This is sad since our camp happens in the fall. I thought about asking if we could pitch tents in the ditch outside the gates, but decided not to.

What is good though is that CM*TO 2020 is now CM*TO 2020-1/2. That's right, we have claimed naming rights to a weekend next spring so the show can go on. We are still working on what that weekend will be, and which round of the draft we get our pick in, but as of now, the plan is to snag something in Q2 2021 for camp (sometime from March to May). For now though, we aren't planning on a fall camp this year.

Another question on our minds is that if we bump our 2020 camp to 2020-1/2, will there still be an appetite for a fall camp in 2021? We're working on that. We're trying to figure out what to do. I'd appreciate hearing what you think.

There was a waitlist last year, right? Two camps is effectively twice as many spots, which would let some diehards go twice and let you have twice as many spots for the people only interested in one CMTO next year.

Yup - also pondering the value of 2 smaller camps vs one.

I'd possibly be in, depending on dates.

We'll possibly invite you, depending on how many socks you bring.

And grants' SO will throw them in the lake, that way only she can get the socks.

Also, FIRE'd. No more sock pipeline.

Fine, I'll see if I have some non-retired friends who can funnel me some. Then you can trade me Jiffy's, and then I'll bribe the fish to get the invite.

This is almost a text-adventure game.

I brought military socks for Grant`s SO because last year her feet were cold and I went and grabbed my excessively warm military ones, and offered to bring more the next year.

Others around got some because I brought more than she needed. (They were immediately taken)

Camps in 2021

It’s difficult to leave Australia at the moment. You have to have an amazing reason to get permission to leave the country. We’re finally actually getting covid19 here - before a few weeks ago, it was almost all people from overseas (Australians are still coming back in), but now there’s actually some community transmission despite quarantine. They’re telling us it’s probably under control.

So it would take Australia opening up to let people out, and the travel insurance people providing health insurance for Australians going to Canada. In the past all such insurance is for North America, and I can’t see that being offered for a while.  Certainly not before March - May.

I’d expect that you could only run the first camp with Canadians. I suspect that Canada won’t be letting others in at that stage - the US will spend most of the rest of this year not controlling the spread, and then they might as well start developing herd immunity.

The second camp is a remote possibility.

@deborah I think CMTO is about as amazing a reason as anyone could conjure up for your country Australia to let ypu leave the country. Just the mere possibility of having access to fluff should be enough to convince your government officials. And you may have to throw in some free socks. You could also mention representing the Rest Of The World in Volley Hockeyball as an essential service that needs to be done for the world.

Seriously though at this rate I doubt a spring CMTO is doable for your southern neighbors @Le Poisson .

We are very aware that it will be touch-n-go on whether or not a spring camp is possible for anyone. We've put our name in the draft to snag a spring weekend, but at this point we aren't announcing (or planning) anything more than that. Everything is pending outcomes with the pandemic, the camp's policy, and our own levels of comfort with travel and gatherings.

I'm hoping that we can manage some sort of a CM*TO-lite. If this does go ahead, it may end up being a Canadian only event. heck, it may end up being an Ontario only event - or even a southern Ontario Only event. who knows. It all depends on winter infection rates, spring recovery rates, and levels of comfort for folks travelling.

The logistik website does not offer any more than the line description, nato stock number and photo.
The packaging does not provide temperature rating but provides the breakdown of 78% wool, 21% nylon and 1% spandex. But yes they are very warm... I will begin amassing inventory.

I typically use 80%-90% wool 10%-20% nylon yarn on mine.  Yours might be warmer *if* made from thicker yarn.  Now, I could use yak, alpaca or bison in place of sheeps wool and mine would be orders of magnitude warmer.  But I don't have temp ratings on mine, either!

They are cuter, though.

The category of heat retention is "stupid high"

Also, the wool is terrible and itchy, and must be worn with another sock underneath in order to keep from going insane.

Life is too short for itchy feet!!!  But I'd say the military socks are warmer based on that category.

I have fibre (from Gemini Fibre? Wellington Fibre?) that has Samoyed wool mixed in with Shetland wool.  Samoyed wool, also known as a variety of chiengora, is incredibly warm.  I'm almost afraid to make socks from it now that I am an urbanite.  I would have overheated feet.

I had a sad when my calendar alerted me CMTO 2020 starts in a few hours.

Yeah.  :(  It's still in my calendar, too.

There'd be some interesting stories around the campfire this year, that's for sure.

Except for @Jon_Snow  He'd be out running a marathon or something crazy like that.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
