Maybe they'd come later, if you didn't have those dang kids taking up all the room.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

I was going to ask why the English can't learn to speak.

But if you're barely English, then all is clear.

Plus America don't really play cricket (or any other game that involves the rest of the world) and nor have they been terrible at winning the ashes for the last decade or so (we'll ignore the whole of the 90's thank you).

THEM'S FIGHTING WORDS. I remember the first Ashes that I was at all interested in, where one of the England players seemed to be out for a duck in every single innings. That was in the days of Lillee and Thompson and the Chappell brothers and Marsh - glorious players!

FIGHT.

we went through a spell where we had good players but a terrible team. Couldn't win anything.
then? I moved to the States and we started doing well again and I missed it all.

We'll have to introduce a cricket element to whatever crazy game the natives are playing at this camp. It'll run for ages and we can have drinks breaks and sledging.

There is no crazy game. The game has rules and order and is a beautiful game. And both footballs got lost before half-time.

I like the idea of adding a sport every year, so eventually, years from now, the name is ridiculously long, and it's a struggle to come up with a new sport to add. :D

This is the best idea! However, one might note that the previous title already lacked the Checkers component.

The sledging appears to have crept in lately - I think it is NOT CRICKET! Tea Breaks with a competition for sports phrases that have crept into the generic idiom perhaps?

While sledging has a Canadian connotation, I suspect your version does not involve snow. If it did, UH would not be discussing it.

From Wikipedia

Sledging is a term used in cricket to describe the practice whereby some players seek to gain an advantage by insulting or verbally intimidating the opposing player. The purpose is to try to weaken the opponent's concentration, thereby causing him/her to make mistakes or underperform.

It didn't come up with the Canadian version.

We are the overall victors. The Ashes have existed since 1882. However, Australia has only existed since 1900 (so before then, England were often playing state sides), so I don't really count pre-federation Ashes series. But even if I did, you can see that we have RESOUNDINGLY RETAINED THE ASHES. You can see that we occasionally give England a win, so that they don't feel quite so outclassed.

I think it should be HockeyVolleyBallCricket - I think the cricket component should be that it is played over several days, and has tea breaks (complete with orange eighths and liquid sustenance). The cricket ball would be too hard and small to use.

For those who don't know, a cricket test (game) is five days long. The Ashes series is played every two years and there are five tests in each series. It is being played at the moment, in the middle of a heat wave in Australia (we are 2 - 0 so it is possible that we will win). The Ashes were started when Australia trounced England and were thought to have taken the ashes of English cricket back to Australia.

...please don't try to explain it to me.

That's a breakout session I'll opt out of.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

My one complaint about that which can not be discussed - no curling.  The whole reason I came was to learn how to curl.

The Ashes were started when Australia trounced England and were thought to have taken the ashes of English cricket back to Australia.

damn you are good.

totally right.

thrashing us by 32 wins to 32.

thats convincing.......

Talk... its all they have.
According to wikipedia...

In the 134 years since 1883, Australia have held the Ashes for approximately 78.5 years, and England for 55.5 years.

32 wins each.

your moral high ground here is based on not winning it.

stooping low.

(although its looking like it might be 33 vs 32 soon..)

England seems to have a good chance in the WACA match at the moment.

Each time, I have stated that we have held the Ashes for considerably longer. The mere fact that we have both won the same number of series doesn't impinge on the fact that I am RIGHT. Besides, generally speaking, when two teams have the same number of series wins, you look at the numbers of actual games won. Have you done that? Somehow, England is more effective at winning a series by the skin of their teeth, whereas we seem to be more effective at the all-out slaughter of the opposition.

For those wondering - the Org Committee will be meeting in the coming weeks to begin our journey toward CM*TO. If you have any broad directional suggestions to make, I suggest you PM them to me between now and then, and we can start to shape the look/feel of camp.

I have received payment already for about 8 Canadians. Thanks very much for expediting your payments. I've been in touch with the venue and have the menu and pricing for camp this year, and everything looks like it is going to fit just right.

Those who have paid will be getting a link to the entry form in their inbox shortly. Upon completion of the survey you will get a link to the top-secret campers only forum where we will discuss such important planning details as whether the jumbo marshmallows really are better than standard sized ones.

Thanks to everyone who has paid already... and I'll post another update after our Org. Com. meeting.

Now back to cricket.

Curling is such a funny sport. There’s a club about five minutes away from my house.

I curled for the first time last year. My boss decided it would be a fun teambonding event. Well, I wiped out spectacularly quite a few times...but at least redeemed myself by scoring pretty well :)
