A full year to convince the SO might be doable. Just need to make sure it isn't a weekend I'm in NZ.
I am totally in! And amazingly enough, DH said he'd like to come next year too :) :)
CMC2017 was an incredible weekend filled with fabulous people. I had several shy-attacks at the thought of meeting so many strangers but everyone was so warm and welcoming. I loved the energy in the air and all the support. I even got a facepunch one night by the campfire and must say, I was quite delighted. So much to chew on now post-CMC and I've been reflecting on it in my journal. My favourite part was how the entire group would clap when someone announced they were going to FIRE. How cult-like is that lol!
Prospector did an incredible job and I spent all weekend at awe at the level of ninja-planning skills displayed - in both big details and little details. His passion and energy played a massive role in the success of CMC. It was a really, really good mix of formal sessions by presenters and plenty of informal free time where we got to wander from group to group. We rarely felt rushed to move from one activity to another and there was soooo much time for lengthy in-depth conversations with fascinating people. There were no cliques and it was so nice for someone like me (I lurked for a long time and only started getting active in the last year or so and am still figuring out who is who) as I could just wander from group to group meeting different people.
I also really loved how Prospector set us up with a secret CMC forum. It was such a fantastic safe place to post more in-depth Introduction threads (that usually ended up turning into mini-journals lol). It also gave us a spot for pre and post CMC chatter - all of which helps us bond as a group. Oh and of course, a group of grown adults singing wacky camp songs about black socks at the top of their lungs still cracks me up. As for the International Canada vs World VolleyHockeyball Tournament (did I get that right?), all I can say is...Mustachians are good sports!
So excited for CMC2018!
I am 100% in. I will generously donate my ALC time so you can have a repeat of the best breakout session of camp. :P

Thanks Elaine - but it was Joe who set up the hidden forum, and you were the Chair of the Volley-Hockey-Ball association.
Then a huge thanks goes out to @arebelspy for giving us the super-awesome hidden forum - and for staying on top of giving new registrants access.
As for HockeyVolleyBall, the best part is - the both of us STILL call it a different name every time! I giggle every time I think of the sheer madness that was that tournament.

Its so good that you are going to cheer Canuck ExPat into a redo!! Thanks Jenga!!

You keep pushing this and we will lose our real life besties status. Remember how you were nervous about getting along in person? Pretty soon we're not even going to get along online.
You two did a great job creating an incredible amount of chaos! :D

I was completely in awe at how you (and the other heroic checker players) were able to concentrate so intensely on the checkers game while multiple random beachballs were flying over your heads. I thought checkers was going to be a simple, fast-paced game that wouldn't require much thinking. Thank you for contributing to making the game that much more hilarious for the spectators.

The checkers part was great! Next time you should set up 4 side-by-side checkers matches. Keep the "rotate in" people aspect (maybe after every 3 pieces are taken or something, so it doesn't drag on as the switches cause a new player coming in to sit for a minute and analyze board position), but have multiple going. :D
I see I am going to have to keep certain members of the Intl HockeyVolleyball Committee in line or this could get well out of hand. You certainly appeal to his desire for complexity! You two did a great job creating an incredible amount of chaos! :D

Multi-games - this could add another dimension - I'll have to approach the International Volley-Hockey-Ball association with this idea.
I reallyreallyreally hope this ends up being the last weekend of September, as I've just made plans for the previous weekend and would hate to have to decide between the two events.
Not clear, do we expect the venue/setup to be the same, or TBD?

From what I understand: Same venue, similar setup with tweaks, approximately one month earlier.
I vote that those who couldn't come last year get first chance to buy tickets.

I think there might be a few upset forum members at that, and possibly no repeat attendees.
This will be a tough thing for Prospector to balance.
However if there WAS a vote, I'm certainly not going to vote against my own interests.
Posting to follow. I had an amazing time this year and would absolutely love to go again next year.
Hmm, all the talk here about this year's has me interested! Posting to follow.

I'm more and more convinced (one of the many semi-ER options) is the best path for most people, and I think I'd blow a lot of people's minds and literally change their FIRE plans.

The bit I know of you from our meetings IRL I think you would enjoy it quite a bit Nate. Feel free to PM or we can meet for a drink sometime if you want to talk more about it :)
I can do real estate, that's what I typically do at CMSeattle (mainly cause they keep making me, but I've also done post-FIRE), but what I really want to do is a semi-ER breakout session.

Do you mean part-time work or a break from work for a specific period of time?
This is theoretically very doable for myself & +1 and it sounds like attendees had a blast this year, but I'm more of a forum-lurker than a people person.
P2F, just so I don't miss out now that things are split between threads. I'm highly considering volunteering for a breakout session regarding vices, backtracks, and all the potential awful things that could happen.

Well, if you run this next year, hopefully I'll have some downshift-job experience to share, alongside my downshift-parenting and downshift-volunteering stuff.
I guess semi-ER gives the opportunity to have a diverse focus.
A full year to convince the SO might be doable. Just need to make sure it isn't a weekend I'm in NZ.Have me and okits over for tea. We will pretend to be normal for a few minutes to help convince him. Then you can usher us out of the house before we act too weird.

The SO is now on board with me attending. But you can still come over.
Things we should have talked more about at CMC2017... AKA - if you submit a good abstract to run a breakout on these topics at CMC 2018, I'll pretty much guarantee a ticket:
- Real Estate buying/selling - capital strategies, buy-hold strategies, etc.
- The quality of life balance in budgeting
-
So many awesome awesome ideas :) CMC2018 is going to be even more amazing than the first!Totally!

These topics are very much of interest for me! I would also like to see/attend a session around balancing social expectations and a mustachian lifestyle (i.e how to explain to coworkers why you're not ordering Greek take-out for lunch for the team building excercise; opting not to pitch in $100 into the wedding gift for a friend etc...)

I could do something on that! I wrote a post a long time ago about keeping your fucks to yourself: socializing and networking on the cheap. Three years without drinking or eating out in NYC makes one pretty comfortable with that. Could be a mix of living cheaply in NYC (alternate housing, for ex, and how I spend $1k/ mo), and the psychology/social expectations aspect.
Also the charity/activism angle prosp mentioned, although my experience is in American politics.
I have experience with living with a non MMM partner, but I doubt people want to hear my solution of "break up and move out."

I wonder if this one would be good for a small panel. I could chime in about my experiences as well: walking/biking to work for 19 years, buying fewer than 20 items of clothing in the last 5 years, etc.

The Kool-Aid was excellent. And so was the volley-hockey-ball. Especially when Himself fell over the side of the rink and stuck his thumb up that he was ok.

The karaoke came up about 2 days before the event, thanks to rubyunrailed. The secret forum doesn't work so well if you tell people about it.
You should have known it would be cool though. Did you see the list of attendees? :)
Would have been great to have you there! Next time!
Morning <Prospector>!
Hope you are having a fantastic start to your day.
You will have a September weekend so no worries.
Either the 21st-23rd or the 28th-30th of September.
As soon as it’s confirmed you’ll be the first to know.
Thanks!

I have a hard time believing you have shy attacks.
Do you think there will be an option to stay an extra night (Sun) or even get there a night early? For a fee, of course. As I will be retired then, my travel plans will have lots of flexibility, I hope.
It would be fun to have a Thursday evening group who can chat in the relative calm before the uber fun hordes arrive on Friday... (This is assuming I am lucky enough to get a spot at camp..)
Crossing my fingers for the later weekend.

There was a group of people who stayed an extra night on Sunday. And a bunch of folks did a meetup in TO the night before. Plus lots of sleepovers as people arrived from different places. G-Dog and thegoblinchief crashed at my place and I know there were many others who stayed in various other houses. So yes, it is a possibility. I wish I had stayed for the Sunday night but was out of vacation days. Maybe next year...who knows, I might be FIRE'd by then! DH is more open to it now and we've spent the past few days talking....

More open to a) FIRE or b) CMC? :)
having Rockstache help by handing out shirts made check-in run really smoothly. It seems like nothing, but it was good and having her there the night before would be good for me, and a bonus for her.
the back end is so much fun
If choosing between a day at the back end or front, the back end is so much fun because we all know each other and can let down the hair a little in a smaller group. The smaller group at the front end you get to know them some, but everyone's nervous still, and then with the massive people still there if everyone leaves the same day, you don't get that same small group totally comfortable bonding.+1000
However.... why not both? ;)
3 day camp, optional days on both ends.
(We'd be there for all 5 days, likely leaving Annabelle next time, and willing to help with whatever we can.)
It is interesting how different the few voices here are from the many voices in the surveys.
Has anyone considered the cost implications of a 5 day conference vs a 3-day event? By adding 2 days, you are upping the meals and lodging by 60% when a number of people who attended the original could barely afford to attend. We need to remember that there is a spectrum we all fall on between FI and "FInding a pot to piss in." Also, while a 5-day festival/conference sounds fun, anyone who has attended a week-long music festival will let you know that things taper back DRAMATICALLY after day three of the party. It is impossible to sustain the level of intensity and activity found in days 1 and 2 for a full week.
Finally the administrative nightmare that would be booking rooms for early arrivals, late stayers, 3-day only, and 5 day extended passes, and the attendant carpool, bedding exchange, special diet accommodations, etc. would be... "type 2 fun" to steal a phrase from Sam.
I think you guys are all trying to kill me.

I totally missed the survey. What survey?
I sent a picture with me hiking with my CMC 2017 toque. It wasn't really tbe point of tbe picture, but it has received some positive comments from family and friends. Who would have known? In my own way I am spreading tbe news for CMC 2018.
As of an email I received today, we have a date for CMC2018. I shall announce it once I hear back from the folks I messaged today to sit on my "Organizational Committee." I know you are all already standing by, but please continue to stand by.

How does the lottery work with couples?
I am sure I am not the only one who immediately realized how to gamify this situation and up their odds.
EDIT: ...no? Just me? :P I'm sure there's a few of you that love loopholes that spotted it immediately.
Hint: Even if you're single, partner up with a forum friend wanting to attend. Suddenly you both are twice as likely to be able to attend as if you just applied for yourself. Now the question becomes... how many people in a "family"? 50 foumers all applying for themselves + 49 guests, if any of the 50 is chosen, all get in? ;)
(I'm tongue-in-cheek on this last part, of course, I'm sure it's capped at +1-3 or whatever, or actual family size.)

If you win a spot and later have a change of plans and can't go, what happens?Same as last year - it depends on the resale market/waitlist situation
I suppose that's the fairest way to do it. Are you picking presenters pre-lottery then? Or pulling non-keynotes out of the attendee pool?

I will fill some presentation spots early but hold some for closer to the event. Last year we have a bunch of late joiners who would make great presenters.

Since this isn't a very locked down part of the forum, would you mind removing the username of my better half in this snipped quote?
I just realized that there is literally no reason to hold back on opening up the lottery thing. I'll open up the link immediately. This link will stop accepting traffic on Dec. 1 with a goal to award bunks by Dec. 15th. This should allow enough time to buy a bunk as a Christmas gift.

How does the lottery work with couples?
You apply for a couples spot. If your question is whether it diminishes your opportunity at getting a spot, the answer is not really since you can enter the lottery with your SO as your guest, and she can enter the lottery with you as her guest.
ie. 2 people get 2 entries.

I am confused by these posts. So couples get double chances or you're going to dedupe?
If going by the rules in the first post, seems like couples would get an advantage. As a single person, guess how I feel about this prosp!
(Just choose me as a presenter again and I will not pursue legal action.)
Who is your lawyer?

Booyeah!!! We have one confirmed speaker for CM*TO - I'm not saying who just yet, but I can't hold out for long. This is exciting stuff. I'll be reaching out to speaker #2 forthwith. I'd like to have at least half of our speakers arranged neatly before the lottery ends. From the first paragraph I thought it was related to a hint you left in another thread (re: business), but the second paragraph negated that. Very curious though. :)
Let's just say that this person is an all-star in my eyes and that CM*TO wouldn't be the same without them. Also, if anyone guesses who it is, well... I'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I'm going to guess an NHL star that is extremely frugal. One who's on the edge of being an All-star, and plays for Props`favorite team.

Prosp cheers for Montreal.
if its an montreal or Toronto player then they should be free by the end of April......
Is mj running a tinder breakout session?
I'm hoping she angry cheerleads someone else into setting a FIRE date!Is mj running a tinder breakout session?
Whether official or not, there is no way to prevent MJ from repeating her tinder session/obsession.
The title of this thread says that it will be October 21, but the first page says it will be in September. I am confused.
Competition is heating up. maybe we should all stop talking about CMC for a bit? Your amazing work is paying off, Prospector!!

Where is that list?
Where is that list?
Oh, I just meant the list of sessions I emailed Prospector I'd be interested in running (see earlier discussion in the thread). :)
Once he finalizes breakout sessions, I'm sure a list will be posted, right now it's:
MonkeyJenga doing Angry Life Cheerleading
CanuckExpat doing Post-FIRE life
Both of these are repeats from this year, by popular demand.
Email Prospector any session ideas you have that you want to run (or just that you would like to see run, even, and he can try to find a speaker, I'd bet).
I'm sorry if you already stated this somewhere, but how much time do you expect between, "Congrats, you're in," and "payment is due?"
Didn't mean to make it sound complainypants, Prospector! I'm just looking forward to knowing the outcome.

You don't sound complainy at all. Apparently I don't sound funny either. :)
If we are honored/lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend again, we might be travelling in an RV and bringing a 9 yr old. Cheapskate Hubs and I would be happy to lead a kid friendly activity (hike/nature walk, craft, etc) if there are other folks who are bringing their young-ins.
Synergize the optimization.
No way, this made me giggle hysterically :) Might be a humblebrag, definitely excited about homeschooling, and so grateful to have attended and spoken up during the angry life cheerleader breakout session. I honestly don't think we would have committed without being shamed into it :) It would have been OMY forever...If we are honored/lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend again, we might be travelling in an RV and bringing a 9 yr old. Please remember to have your SO check their email as well if you both entered for a bunk. They may have won instead of you.*
*Ahem, Jordan.
Awww, man. Well, maybe there's hope for me on the waiting list.
Check your inbox! Tonight I sent out the CM*TO winning emails. If you got a bunk you have until Feb. 1 to send in payment.
I will be sending out the waitlist emails tomorrow... or Tuesday.

Yeah yeah. I got it. :)
UH, you were there in spirit this year (room name, plus there were a few of us following your story), so it'll be awesome to see you in person next time. I do hope you say fun words!!
Awww, man. Well, maybe there's hope for me on the waiting list.
Prospector would know the numbers, but I think at least 10-15 folks last year were off the wait list, though some were at very short notice so were mainly Canadians with less complicated travel arrangements.
Heh, UH's story was definitely campfire fodder.
(It was in the midst of everything; literally the day CMC started, the wife suddenly was unsure about signing the closing paperwork for the house.)
Some people were not familiar, so we were able to share the heartbreaking tale of the most stoic man on the forums.
I'm glad it will be a much happier story by September.

Glad I inspire a story or 2!!
She'd already said yes to signing the paperwork so I could buy a house.
She said she'd do it 2 months prior to closing even though she claimed her lawyer said it was a bad idea.
I spoke to my lawyer who came back to me on the day of closing to say that the wife's lawyer was fine with it as long as the money was accounted for in the settlement.
I informed my wife where she needed to be to sign the documents and the night before closing she declared that she wouldn't sign which would have sank the whole deal and left me homeless.*
She finally emailed the morning of closing to agree to sign (there's another story deep in there but doesn't matter in this context).
I did not get much sleep that night!!
and they wondered why i'd turned down going to the camp in favor of staying behind and getting the closing done....
*One of the plans was to move back to the house that morning if she refused to sign as we still both owned it and both had rights to be in there. I think that may have made her reconsider if it had gone that far....
I would also have rented a house and, once the settlement was done, sued her for the difference in price plus equity loss.
I didn't need to do any of that as it turned out but holy crap - what a 24 hours that was....
So that was why you stood us up!??!
Lack of dedication I say. It would have been nice if you had had a reasonable excuse. I'll let it go in exchange for a sixer of Innis and Gunn.

I'll be talking English at you.
Its worse than I thought.

Also I don't like beer.
OK good! At least I'm still special in one way.

THEM'S FIGHTING WORDS. I remember the first Ashes that I was at all interested in, where one of the England players seemed to be out for a duck in every single innings. That was in the days of Lillee and Thompson and the Chappell brothers and Marsh - glorious players!America had the same proportion of convict settlers as Australia did. Plus America don't really play cricket (or any other game that involves the rest of the world) and nor have they been terrible at winning the ashes for the last decade or so (we'll ignore the whole of the 90's thank you).
FIGHT.
we went through a spell where we had good players but a terrible team. Couldn't win anything.
then? I moved to the States and we started doing well again and I missed it all.
We'll have to introduce a cricket element to whatever crazy game the natives are playing at this camp. It'll run for ages and we can have drinks breaks and sledging.
I like the idea of adding a sport every year, so eventually, years from now, the name is ridiculously long, and it's a struggle to come up with a new sport to add. :DThis is the best idea! However, one might note that the previous title already lacked the Checkers component.
The first rule of VolleyHockeyBall is that we do not discuss VolleyHockeyball.

I don't think that was ever discussed.

Tea Breaks with a competition for sports phrases that have crept into the generic idiom perhaps?

From Wikipedia
Sledging is a term used in cricket to describe the practice whereby some players seek to gain an advantage by insulting or verbally intimidating the opposing player. The purpose is to try to weaken the opponent's concentration, thereby causing him/her to make mistakes or underperform.
It didn't come up with the Canadian version.

We are the overall victors. The Ashes have existed since 1882. However, Australia has only existed since 1900 (so before then, England were often playing state sides), so I don't really count pre-federation Ashes series. But even if I did, you can see that we have RESOUNDINGLY RETAINED THE ASHES. You can see that we occasionally give England a win, so that they don't feel quite so outclassed.

I think it should be HockeyVolleyBallCricket - I think the cricket component should be that it is played over several days, and has tea breaks (complete with orange eighths and liquid sustenance). The cricket ball would be too hard and small to use.
For those who don't know, a cricket test (game) is five days long. The Ashes series is played every two years and there are five tests in each series. It is being played at the moment, in the middle of a heat wave in Australia (we are 2 - 0 so it is possible that we will win). The Ashes were started when Australia trounced England and were thought to have taken the ashes of English cricket back to Australia.

totally right.
thrashing us by 32 wins to 32.
thats convincing.......
Talk... its all they have.
According to wikipedia...
In the 134 years since 1883, Australia have held the Ashes for approximately 78.5 years, and England for 55.5 years.
England seems to have a good chance in the WACA match at the moment.

I have never watched cricket.
This discussion is more fun to watch than cricket.

Canadian here. Apparently, curling is generally an excuse to do *some* minor exercise while doing some major drinking. Bonspiels are essentially games interspersed with everyone buying rounds, and apparently the beer is cheaper than at the legion.
Cheaper than the legion, people.
For those wondering - the Org Committee will be meeting in the coming weeks to begin our journey toward CM*TO. If you have any broad directional suggestions to make, I suggest you PM them to me between now and then, and we can start to shape the look/feel of camp.
At some point, people will meet to discuss things. Before that, do stuff, and send it to me. I hate you.

I have received payment already for about 8 Canadians. Thanks very much for expediting your payments. I've been in touch with the venue and have the menu and pricing for camp this year, and everything looks like it is going to fit just right.
Those who have paid will be getting a link to the entry form in their inbox shortly. Upon completion of the survey you will get a link to the top-secret campers only forum where we will discuss such important planning details as whether the jumbo marshmallows really are better than standard sized ones.
Thanks to everyone who has paid already... and I'll post another update after our Org. Com. meeting.
Now back to cricket.

Who goes to a legion? (sad since I'm military...)
Curling sounds like bowling (in that its really just an excuse to do something mildly athletic while drinking with friends).
Canoeing after CMC was the same way :)

It is satisfactory - I have WON (remarks about convicts only happen when the opposition has mentally conceded).
I want to know why we are not talking about incorporating LACROSSE into Hockeyvolleyball, as it is SUPPOSEDLY the national game of Canada. I don't think we even have a national game. Does the USA?

- Who goes to the legion?
- A menu request for tourtierre* from a British expat living in America
Note that my spell checker wants to correct this to "torturer" which may be funny, but nope. Also I am too lazy to look up the correct spelling.
So far the org com agenda includes:
- Why lacrosse is not part of VolleyHockeyBall
- Whether or not Australia is superior in Cricket
- A minor question on Curling
- Who goes to the legion?
- A menu request for tourtierre* from a British expat living in America
This meeting may not provide progress toward forming our camp, but it shall be interesting.

Britain just invents all the games in order to be beaten at them by others who take it seriously.

We have only had one prime minister get lost (he may have drowned, but the CIA may have kidnapped him). I wasn't going to mention him for another couple of days.
And Britain is exceedingly good at inventing games that everyone else trounces them at. The trouble is that they, also, seem to take their losses seriously.
Tourtière is pie crust and meat... it's kinda dull. Unless you're in Lac St-Jean, where you must put atleast 4 different animals in it.

It is a culinary delight that Australia is KNOWN for. If you are in the middle of nowhere, and you pull up at the only habitation in 500km (a petrol (gas) station with a campground attached - a roadhouse), you will be able to buy a meat pie - you may even have a choice of flavours. Britain and Australia for a start.
Thats our gift to them - pies and sport. Its all about the culture.
On my screen it seems hella-big!Yes, it did come up big, but it gives you an appreciation of the flaky pastry on top, the fact that pies tend to be made with two types of pastry, what they look like when properly cooked...

The same can be said for sticky date pudding. I had that dessert EVERY DAY during my 3 week vacation in Australia after accidentally finding it on day #1 of the trip.

Ohhhh, this explains why I haven't seen sticky date pudding since leaving Australia! It's one of my favourite desserts. I would totally have it every day in your situation. I do have an excellent recipe for it stashed away somewhere, I should dig it up for you!
Definitely looking like 33 vs 32 soon. Maybe even tomorrow. 4-549, a record fifth wicket partnership! It will probably be a draw. It's going to rain.

I feel so bad for someone who signed up for the CM*TO lottery as a non-regular and won, and is reading this thread eight months from now, through all this ashes cricket meat pie stuff trying to get info for CM*TO (and the thread will undoubtedly be many, many more pages by then).
:D

This is it! (http://www.exclusivelyfood.com.au/2009/05/sticky-date-pudding-recipe.html) the butterscotch sauce is amazing, I think I could just make a double batch of that and eat it for dessert. This is the only recipe I've ever tried so I can't vouch for how it compares to others, but I loved it!

I already have payment from over 10% of camp attendees - and that's only payments from Canada. No idea how many Americans have paid through our US payment system but I should start hearing soon.
Thanks to all the folks who are taking care of business early on. It makes things so much easier for us!

I paid through Zelle a few days ago. I hope the $$ got through to the other side!
(I mentioned this upthread, but I think my post got buried in the cricket/pie confab. ;-)

Yes - but you play for the other team on VolleyHockeyBall, so I know nothing about your payment until the transfer reaches me. Then I can add you to my paid sheet... even though we both know the cash is sitting with our banker.
Unfortunately I am having some trouble with Zelle. I am getting the money, but not the email notifications
Is there a way to login directly to Zelle? I can't remember anymore. I was able to see all the payments in my bank account so that was good. Will have to check notification settings in my bank account.Unfortunately I am having some trouble with Zelle. I am getting the money, but not the email notifications
Weird.
I get email notifications when tenants pay me via Zelle.. maybe check if there's a setting in your profile you can turn on to get email notifications?
Spam folder maybe?Checked that too. Will mess around my Gmail some more to see if there are any other hidden folders.
@NinetyFour I think yours is one of the payments I received. Unfortunately I am having some trouble with Zelle. I am getting the money, but not the email notifications - so I don't even have easy access to your email addresses! Odd since I got the email notification when I sent $1 to myself. I sent the list of payments I received today to Chris who will help me match names to email addresses so we can confirm receipt of your payments. So far, I got one payment via Paypal and 3 via Zelle.
Thanks!

I just realized I never got a wait-list email. Did these go out? I wonder if I made a typo when I entered the lottery?

Thanks for the ping NinetyFour. Your payment is in the CM*TO bank account and you should get your info on camp in the next day or two. Thanks to you I also discovered another payment sitting there, so hey, there will be a few happy folks tonight!
A reminder to those still owing, payment is due by month end. We will re-sell any unpaid seats after that.

Is the exchange rate that @elaine amj mentioned in the announcement email still valid, or is it whatever the previous month is. I'll pay today. Gotta see how that Super Secret Forum is doing. For two tickets, it would be $415.10 according to my calculations. Give me the word, and I'll get it taken care of.

LOL! You guys are funny. That's a lot of pings in one day.
Yes, there was a sharp spike in the exchange rate over the holidays. So for now, I am offering 0.80 (so CAD$265 x 0.80 = USD$212). That said, there hasn't been enough time to send out notice so I will continue to honor the old rate as well.
Thanks everyone!

I have never heard of this person. And googing brings up a fair amount of different people. So I can comfortably say the following. No, not Paula Shore.

Folks, I know its a little late to come through with a message like this, but I'm starting to relax a little and believe we have a real-live CM*TO on our hands.
Is it "real live"? I always thought it was "real life."
Well we're up to 26 members in the CM*TO private forum, and a bunch more paid already.
I'm starting to relax a little and believe
Is it "real live"? I always thought it was "real life."
Yup - I mean this thing is living now. It is beyond an idea and is a living thing. A baby to be nurtured and carefully raised.

The second baby gets to watch TV and touch all the breakables because by that point the grown ups are tired.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this, TBH.

A question from the camp kitchen regarding the meatball party...
Sriracha Meatballs... yes/no?
Also should the Meatball party be formal attire this year? (Or as formal of a Hawaiian Shirt as JR owns?)

How about formal wear optional, but encouraged?
I would not be able to eat a sriracha meatball. Depending on the amount of sriracha in the air, I may not even be able to get close to the party :( I vote no.
The meatballs (and falafal - which is one of my favourite things) were definitely a highlight. Don't know about the sriracha - never heard of it before.
Not sure - HOT chilli sauce is too much, but something lightly coated in it may be nice. I was really surprised when the falafals were served, because I have never associated them with meatballs - Souvlaki or Gyros - yes, but meatballs - no. I guess it's because they have always been available in the Greek and Turkish places that are just about everywhere in Melbourne, but they don't tend to have meatballs. The meatballs (and falafal - which is one of my favourite things) were definitely a highlight. Don't know about the sriracha - never heard of it before.
Sriracha is a type of hot chili sauce.
The falafels were round and fun and met requirements for vegetarian and vegan diets at a meatball party. Maybe this year we can do falafels AND tofu balls. or something. I felt bad for the wait times on falafels for my herbivore friends.
I don't like sriracha, falafel, or formal wear.

Are you severely allergic? As much as I like chile sauces, I don't think it's worth it to have people who won't be able to participate.
Weren't there lamb meatballs? Those were good!!
Just paid via paypal for myself and SCUBAdude. I'm glad you guys are still using this thread because I nearly forgot I won a spot in the lottery! Looking forward to camp and more falafel and good company. :)

This is about as formal as I get. I mean, I can bring the dress, it doesn't take up much space. Lost the hat, though.
If I bring a lamb, could we meatball it after petting it?
-Hey where did that cute lamb go?
-You ate it yesterday.
*How to cause troubling memories in children.
If you bring a lamb, Harbinger Dude will want to bring bunnies. This will turn into a petting zoo instead of a camp.
In other news, the current menu shows Meatball party on Friday night (this year we may be able to hold it outdoors and have music!!) and the Chili for dinner on Saturday.

This won't be a surprise to anyone following his journal, but I'm happy to make the first speaker announcement for CM*TO:
HarbringerofBunnies/TheGoblinChief has volunteered to lead a breakout session on urban homesteading - from growing, putting up, and eating throughout the year - with a side of home schooling, sustainability and small scale permaculture. I'm excited to hear about growing crops, as well as raising meat rabbits and egg laying chickens in Milwaukee where neighbours and winter might stop less hearty folks. But not everything is sunshine and roses - anyone who has followed HarbringerofBunnies knows there have been setbacks and lots of learning along the way.
For those who want to learn more before the breakout session, HarbingerofBunnies' current journal can be found at: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/journals/better-f*cks-better-problems

85? With only two per room? Are we using additional buildings this time, or do the extra bedrooms take care of that?

I reserved more cabins to allow more space and more shower time. So yeah, there will only be 6 people per side of a cabin, and 2 per room. It's nearly Club Med.
Is one of the cabins called CLUB MED?
Thanks guys! We have just over 50 spots paid for out of 85. The waitlist should take care of most of the rest.

Where n is your bonus points and y is the points added to your volleyhockey ball score.

:) If I accumulate enough bonus points, can I get a free tshirt?
Bonus Points are applied to your Volleyhockey ball score following the formula of: y=23((n)th root(surface temperature of Lake Tanganyika/N^(78.6/pi))/current age of the Mongolian Secretary of State)
Where n is your bonus points and y is the points added to your volleyhockey ball score.
If you actually come back with an answer, I'm going to have to verify it, aren't I? I should have remembered there are smart ppl around here before posting.
*stalks off to look up some stuff on googlesnip

The surface of the lake is 773 meters (2,536 feet) above sea level. It has an average surface temperature of 25°C (77°F). Lake Tanganyika has a retention time (the measurement of time that water spends in a particular lake) of 440 years.

"Average" is not part of the formula. (I did find the current air temperature, but not water temperature. I think I'm safe)

I am sure someone will automate all this and make a really nice lookup table!

Are temp & age measurements taken at the time of earning the bonus points or at the time of the game?
Yes, I plan to make a spreadsheet.
Because N is the number of bonus points.

Where n is your bonus points and y is the points added to your volleyhockey ball score.
I wouldn't worry - the result is minimal
I am also a deep sleeping snorer and would like to be your roomie!
Eh, I included earplugs as standard issue equipment when I went to CMC- both for the DJing and for the sleeping. I assumed there was going to be a baseline level of partying, and that the level would be high xD
I know not everyone is comfortable with earplugs, but just saying- they can really work wonders and are super cheap- and it's realistically only for a night or two.
I am also someone who snores on occasion. And also a heavy sleeper. Maybe the snoring question should be on the questionnaire?
What time was the first session last year on Friday? Figuring out if I want to sign up for the Thursday night beforehand. Would be good to put this info in the first post.

Last year’s CMC was so awesome, we all came back raving about it - super excited about what’s in store this year!!ME TOO!!!!!
I can't wait to see the karaoke performances this year (@avrex - Backstreet Boys duet?)
<runs away from the spreadsheets>
So let me get this straight...I need to pack some formal wear for the meatball party? Is a tiara too much?
If I were to start another camp mustache in the same area, would there be enough interest? Sounds like there is a waiting list for this oneI don't think there would be enough people to have both. CM*TO (actually CMC) was a raging success last year, so there are probably more people interested in it because of that. Why not go on the wait list, and see if you get in because of cancellations? The Toronto group appears to be fairly active, and they run CM*TO. Could you go to some of their meetups?
Wow, surprised at how many open bunks. At least you know that everyone who wants to come has gotten the chance since it’s not a super quick sellout.
We also have our mandate set for the meatball party. BEcause what would CM*TO be without meatballs and karaoke? Not CM*TO - I'm like, 90% sure of that.

I assume this means we will be karaoke-ing while eating Meatballs.
I want to hear this.
What this really calls for is a formal portable Meatball Karaoke party.
I'm envisioning ball gowns, tiara's, and a crowd of people heading up the ramp of the boathouse with meatballs on sticks.
Maple floss...my mind just can't conceive it. Like cotton candy?

So today I found the source of maple floss. They would be happy to take a bulk order. Edible Shwag?
So today I found the source of maple floss. They would be happy to take a bulk order. Edible Shwag?
Is it allergen-free? I'm assuming it's vegan, so most attendees can eat it if not diabetic.

It's "healthy plant food, full of minerals", we will all pig out on it (there goes my carb allowance for the day). 1 tsp is a serving? Suuuuuuuuure.
I'll just wear the ballgown that I usually wear to obstacle races...that one already has plenty of mud stains on it so a little marinara will be NBD.What this really calls for is a formal portable Meatball Karaoke party.

I have been really enjoying the Scotia Amex (I got a 35,000 point or $350 bonus + first year free) and the TD Visa Infinite Travel cards (50,000 point or $250 bonus + first year free). DH and I both have one of each so between us, we have about $1200 off in travel with just 4 credit cards. What I particularly like about these cards is the flexibility. I can use them to redeem even things like restaurant meals and theatre tickets and can use the points down to the last penny (no need for round numbers). I'm also not restricted to a certain hotel chain or airline - been using my points so far for Airbnb stays.Have you learned nothing from the forums @ToTheMoon? Travel Hack!TEN Bunks folks!! I'm excited to share our third breakout session:
Awesome adventures in Commonwealth travel hacking
Yes! Come prepared for a discussion about travel hacking opportunities for Canadian residents and those further afield. We will be discussing points and how those of us who are fortunate to live in Canada and elsewhere can get them (Elaine's expertise). However, there is a lot more to cheap travel than just points or credit cards, so we will also discuss other ways that travel can be more frugal (this is Deborah's side). Bring your ideas, and things you have done, and let's hack the expense out of travel! (Non-Commonweath travellers are welcome to attend, but this session will not focus on any specific US point programs)
Elaine (elaine amj) loves to hack credit cards and rewards programs to save thousands of dollars of travel every year.

Deborah is attending CM*TO from Australia for the second time, so you know she has a few tricks up her sleeve on budget travel.

Hi @runningthroughFIRE ! I see your message about bunks and that you are in the U.S. so am just waiting to hear from @elaine amj about the exchange rate, then can send you details on how to purchase bunks (same info will be coming your way too, @grantmeaname , once I receive it).

Can I just say that my country is dumb and should just build some damn trains already? Ugh. I may be arriving by clown car.
So, did my posse just roll in and claim all five of the open bunks?
It's like 10 hours to get to Toronto from NYC but 13 to get to Brantford. 5 extra hours and something like $300 extra to take the train instead of a car.
Edited to add: I know nothing about travel hacking with Amtrak but I suspect it's as fun as hacking the social security administration.
So, did my posse just roll in and claim all five of the open bunks?
Well geez, I came to the forums to check if there's extra bunks for CM*TO or if there's a wait list I could make my tickets available to, as there's a good chance we'll be in Amsterdam or London at the time of CM*TO, and I find out there IS a wait list, but only because Grant and his badass SO are coming?!
Now I need to somehow work out how to cross the Atlantic for this thing.

And our fourth breakout!
I like to bike!
This breakout session will be about making the gradual transition from 100% transit rider to urban bicycle commuter (most of the time), with all the possible steps along that continuum. This breakout will focus on showing people how to get the best resources and information on urban bicycle commuting no matter where they are, as well as often-overlooked and cheap/free resources to help anyone increase their cycling badassity.
BiochemicalDJ is a government professional who balances working in an office building every day while also commuting by bicycle. He's learned valuable lessons along the way, and hopes to pass on advice and stories to help people start off as a cycle commuter on the right foot. When not tinkering with his bicycle, he can be found likely tinkering with his car, computer, DJ equipment, or whatever project is absentmindedly on the go at any one time.

Very soon I will be shutting down the now ex-forum and scuttling it. If you need information from that forum, please move it to the new one via copy/paste.

The problem is that I still want to read everyone's CM*TO Introduction pages.
If everyone could save your Introduction text and copy them over to the new subforum, when it becomes available, that would be great.
I always enjoy reading them, prior to camp, in order to get to know fellow MMM's better. thanks.

You think 1200w is enough to wake up @MonkeyJenga?
About how many watts are equal to a margarine tub and spatula?
All I know is you should never buy and sell stocks on margarine.
Have you been to North Dakota?
The scenery from Winnipeg to Calgary is the same as North Dakota. Endless fields of grain, dead flat, with framsteads here and there.
If you truly want to see it, the train is about the best way.
I would fly.
The train to Banff is the Rocky Mountaineer. Everyone goes on it because the scenery is breathtaking. It goes from Vancouver. https://www.rockymountaineer.com/routes_destinations

I may be making this all more complicated because I also want to see Banff.@Daisy VIA Rail does go right through Jasper. So I feel like you are kind of making this more complicated by adding in Banff (when Japser is already amazing). If you really want to see Banff you should still get off the train in Jasper and take a bus on the Icefield Parkway to Banff.
I need some sane Canadian advice.

Last summer our family vacation was taking VIA rail from somewhere on the prairies to Jasper. Word of warning: VIA rail will be LATE. They were 8 hours late picking us up, and 12 hours late arriving in Jasper. So even if you THINK you are going to see the mountains in the day time, you might not. On the way back VIA was also late, but probably only 2 hours late leaving and 5 hours late on arrival.
Another speaker announcement! This one is Canada focused, so USians are welcome, but should be prepared emotionally for the cost of cheese here.
Groceries stores: Selling the same thing for different prices every week.
This session will be a look at the different type of groceries in Canada, and the most cost effective options, and why two people can leave two different stores and one will have paid 4x the price the other one did. This will also take a look at different Apps and websites that can help optimize and take advantage of areas you weren’t looking at.
Canadian Ben eats human food every week, and still remains below an average of 100$ a month. He is also the reason stores put limits on the quantity you can buy.Spoiler: show

There is never any wine conflict with me. Sharing is caring.
ROFL - I love how autocorrect decided wine was a much better word :)
I found cheap flights today and cleared it with the hubby. I want in.
Can I waitlist myself for a ticket if another one comes available? Hopefully before the cost of flights increases again!
Look out Volley Hockey Ball - I'm coming for you. . .
SQUEEEEE!
Woot! Our star player is coming back!!!!! The burning question is....which team will she play on? Will she be loyal to the Canadians or defect to the other side?

Need to look up the rules again. How did we say defectors get dealt with? Was there a firehose of Jello involved?
Are you bringing hubby too? I need a haircut.
Ttm, make sure to use incognito browser when booking, airlines track your IP and raise prices to cause a reaction to make you book. It's pretty icky, but avoidable.
If you check while incognito, the price should go back down.
I can't confirm yet, but hopefully, I will stay until Monday.
I hitched a ride with @avrex last year - any chance you are staying until Monday again?
I'm trying to book a flight, but do not yet have access to the specific 2018 forum to ask this question:
Is anyone making a break for YYZ (or the general vicinity) Monday?
I have the choice of a 4pm flight (which could get me home that day), or 7:30pm (I would have to overnight in Calgary before going the rest of the way.) Prices have already gone up 10% since yesterday, so I am keen to book this ASAP!
(Feel free to PM me if you don't want to clutter this up.)

I'm not sure if our car from CM*TO to Toronto on Monday is full. Check the secret forum area for CM*TO and find our discussion there.

So, yes, @ToTheMoon I'm pretty sure either I or someone else can get you to the airport.
Can I ask that folks check in at the 'new' secret forum hosted here by ARS, and let me know if things are working for you. I'll start a roll call thread, and you can just answer with "here" or similar.
I've been under a rock for the past six weeks. Can someone direct me to the top secret forum? Thanks. :)

And for everyone's benefit, I have been made to take an oath that this will be a cowbell-free camp. I am depressed, but I understand that this is for the good of all.
[li]We will have about 3 hours of lifeguard time which means use of camp canoes and waterfront for swimming (if you're brave enough).[/li][/list]

That's a promise you can't make. You can only take an oath that you won't use a cowbell.
What's high ropes? Apart from ropes at a high location.

This is AWESOME, and probably the only thing really missing last year (no swimming or paddling without a certified lifeguard on duty). I will amend the packing list to include swim stuff! 🏊🚣

But are you named as a competent person on the camp's payroll?
@ToTheMoon, MXT and I are leaving on Monday at some point. It looks like we'll most likely wind up renting a car. You are welcome to join.
Also, I am very excited by extra falafel, swimming, and especially the ropes course (I have always wanted to try one!)
I MAY miss the cowbell, and keep in mind, @Prospector may be capable of coming up with something even more cringe-worthy! Airhorn? Bugle? 90's hip hop?

Oooh we could get an MP3 of the QI klaxon... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uds09ZAqP4
I think I preferred the cow bell.
Almost as exciting as more falafels, I have our next speaker announcement!
You're smart. The market is smarter.

Nice. Grant's a good choice for speaker. I'm excited about that one.
Have all of the speakers/sessions been decided?
Awesome. I think I missed some of the announcements! Would you mind aggregating them all somewhere (in this thread, or in the CMTO subforum)? :)
Are people still dropping out at this late stage??? And expecting the committee (one of whom is about to make bicycling history and bicycle from Toronto to New York just to visit a roller coaster - surely there are closer ones) to repay for the tickets and get replacement campers???👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😇😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I thought organisation was at the heart of mustashianism. The committee deserve halos.
(I'd be interested in knowing the total amount of additional compensation last year's campers have successfully negotiated, based on the coaching and advice they got at camp. I would not be surprised if the total cracked six figures per year.)

Would you then subtract CSW who successfully negotiated herself to zero compensation as a result of Camp?
(So did I, but that was already in the works and not a result of Camp.)
I'm at double my income.
And yes the people and knowledge and connections.
I have this sudden desire to post something completely irresponsible.

[warning, about to cross the threads] mohair has a nice halo, but I hate working with it, especially in this heat
I just learned about this, as a new Toronto resident. Is everything sold out? 😞
Any questions, please PM me or e-mail cmto.guestmanagement@gmail.com (Prospector is on his epic fundraising bike ride for the next two weeks so my response time to messages will likely be faster).
I am so excited to be coming to CM*TO!It's going to be amazing to hang out with all the other awesome Mustachians. I came home raving about Camp last year. Thrilled my husband is going to join me this year so he can see for himself!

Besides, most of the time my DH will be perfectly happy to chill out on dry land while someone else indulges my obsession with paddling!

Your husband and I can tag team and take breaks while you non-stop paddle for hours.
@Jessa: yes, a bunk opened up and I got in! I’m so looking forward to it. Have virtually no camping experience so that part will be an adventure. Booking a plane flight today.

I'm excited to meet you! You don't need camping experience, just the ability to sleep on a bunk bed :)
I think my voice is still recovering, but I'm back to feeling mostly human again after a good night's sleep. Thanks again to all the organizers for putting on such an amazing event! My only regret is not having enough stock to fuel my new maple floss addiction...We got back this evening. Averaging 2-4 hrs of sleep a night over 3 nights was not good for my voice lol! I am currently talking in hoarse whispers.

You build it, I will come. Though this time, the FIRE'd version of me. I'll have more time and come burn out my retinas with y'all.
FYI - Momma and I checked our calendar against next fall's booking date, and things look do-able from here. Pretty soon I should be letting my lips make you a promise. We just need to tie up the loose ends from this year.

Last year @J_Oden did this, not sure this year.

He did it again this year and has posted a link in the private Camp subforum.
BTW - a shoutout to @J_Oden for capturing so many photo memories of Camp! Thanks for putting so much thought into capturing key moments :) @deborah also took many awesome photos - I particularly loved the ones of the high ropes and VolleyHockeyBall!
Also, I apologize in advance for some of the VolleyHockeyBall videos my husband uploaded to the album. I did not get a chance to look at and curate them before posting...and this morning I watched one video that was 2 minutes (I think - I only watched 30 seconds so far haha!) of the rink walls and repetitive (loud), wild cheering.

My photos are small jpegs. The camera took the same thing as a RAW, but it cannot load to the iPad. Please advise of any that are needed as higher resolution, and I’ll sort them out when I find a hotel with a free business centre.
Easy for me too, but I only have an iPad, which only sees the jpegs on the SD card, so I can’t get the RAW to the internet. However, some places I’m staying have a computer that guests can use. Once I get to one, I could use that to load the RAWs up (these days just about every desktop has an SD slot). I expect there would be a conversion program on any computer, but maybe not. So I guess it would be useful to have the access.

Grant and Daisy - you guys just set me off in a fit of giggles. I probably drove @J_Oden mad bugging him to recite the label just about every time I saw him all weekend. Completely cracked me up!
I'd really, really liked to know how that maple floss got chosen as this year's swag. My DD is taking it to share with her friends at school tomorrow!
I blame Prospector for the fact that I had so much fun and slept so little at camp (no comments please Deborah), that I have spent my first day at the hostel in Banff recupuerating. A nap may have been taken. I finally had a chance to do laundry. Now I feel like I have wasted my first post-CM*TO day. Oh well, good memories all around.
I didn't think I could have as much fun and have such interesting conversations as last year's CMC, but I did! I shared the pictures I took of Prospector's opening lecture with some friends on my "travels around the world" whatsapp chat and have received many questions over it. It sounds like they are going to make me give them a lecture of everything I learned at finance camp when I return from my trip. Much interest in index investing and travel hacking lessons learned.
Can't a girl be FIREd and not be required to give lectures?
If CM*TO is planned for 2019, I feel I will need to go again. I have a true fear of missing out.
And go Team World! I knew we'd beat those Canadians.
Oh, I also got a request from my sister-in-law to bring home some maple floss. She still doesn't know it makes her as strong as a tree though. I may eat my two buckets of maple floss before I return home. Where can one purchase Canadian maple floss in Alberta?
I'd really, really liked to know how that maple floss got chosen as this year's swag.
You know what I just realized? I didn't get any bug bites at camp. AMAZING. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I am not sure what bit me or how it got me where it did, but that bug deserves a prize.

SO A NON-CANADIAN DID IT.
(Was it the payoff for the suspect-scorekeeping in VHB? Let the conspiracy theories begin!)
The Maple Fluff was a big hit with all the muggles at work this last week. Some even appreciated the text description as much as I did.
Stay close to healthy, everyone!

Lesson learned.
Do not ignore your Maple fluff. Eat it as soon as possible.
This is what Maple fluff looks like after being ignored for a year.
