JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments (Australia)
« on: April 02, 2020, 09:45:14 PM »
Anyone think they might be getting one of these?

My employer sent me a promising email that indicates I might be eligible for the JobKeeper payment. I'll give this thread an update if I actually receive it!

Running gag I was once told is that navigating Centrelink is a full time job in itself.

Anyone smart enough to jump through all the hoops to get a payment probably deserves job more than most employed people.

Fingers crossed it's not too difficult for you to get the support you need in this time @limeandpepper

Haha thank you @marty998 that's what I've heard too. I've always previously just frugally lived off my savings when unemployed. On this occasion, it appears that my employer will be doing most of the work on the behalf of the employees in regards to getting JobKeeper payments, so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out, as the legislation hasn't even been passed yet so the details are kind of unclear.

Well, my time to give an update has arrived sooner than I thought. I got my fortnightly payslip and I can see that my employer has added a JobKeeper Subsidy to it. :) My company has also started to delegate various housekeeping-type tasks to us so we'll have some work to do remotely from home while receiving these payments and awaiting the return of our usual tasks.

How does it work? Did you get the full $1500 for the fortnight?

Was tax taken out of it?

My understanding is that the subsidy starts on 30th March, and the company will only get the money in May, but they've started paying it to us already, I guess they must have gotten confirmation that we're definitely eligible and can go ahead with it. I didn't get the full $1500 for this recent fortnight because some of the pay period is before the 30th of March. I'll see what the next payment looks like, I think it'll be $1500 minus however much tax needs to be taken out. I am thinking it will probably be something like $1337.62 but I could be wrong.

DD20 who has been a casual retail worker for the same employer for some years now, got $3000 (less tax - can't recall net figure - so four weeks wages) in a lump sum and is now expecting the $1500 a fortnight (less tax) from next week on.

She was sent a form by her employer and had to fill it out basically saying that she was entitled to it through them and not from any other employer (ie, can't double dip).  It has  been very straightforward although I do think the flaw in the system is making employers pay the wage first and then getting the refund - cashflow is a real problem for most.

In all the circumstances, we feel grateful.  While she can't spend it on anything, I am encouraging her to build some savings.
