YNAB linking/importing question
« on: December 07, 2020, 03:42:47 PM »
I am considering YNAB and have read a good bit about it.  Can anyone comment on its ability to link/stay linked and import transactions from a variety of institutions?  I use mint and personal capital.  I find that mint is often flaky and loses connections pretty regularly.  PC seems better but I have a few connections that are problematic.

Thanks for your input!

I've been using the new YNAB for a little bit less than 6 months and I think it is about as good as Personal Capital at staying linked. There are issues occasionally, generally when something changes on the bank's end, but it hasn't been a big deal.

Been using it for several years.  Only had to re-link once.  Wasn't a big deal.  For me, it just works.

Citi can be a PITA with unlinking every few weeks for no apparent reason, but the app will tell you if it comes unlinked. My other accounts stay linked well. Our bank will unlink if we haven’t logged in online (to the bank’s site) in more than 30 days but that’s their rule, not YNAB’s rule, and it’s a good idea to log in to all your accounts monthly for a checkup anyway.

Several institutions just moved to new technology to help solve the relinking problem.  I no longer have to 2 factor authenticate Capital One every time I use it, and I know Chase updated too.

I’ve been using the web-based YNAB for four years, and I generally find it’s pretty good with connections.  And when something does break it can be fixed without affecting your past data.  It’s head and shoulders above Mint in this regard.

I've never had to re-link any accounts in Mint, but I've had to re-link Chase in YNAB. I was annoyed that it didn't even notify me that I needed to re-link, there were just lots of missing transactions. It cannot link with my target card so that is a giant pain in the butt. I've talked to customer service about it and they said everyone with a target card is in the same boat and they are working on a contract with Target to get it fixed. They keep stressing that in the meantime I can always manually add those transactions, but it is annoying and I don't want to manually add anything.
