Help me chose a side gig.
« on: November 17, 2014, 12:45:22 PM »
Hello,

I am looking to get your collective expertise here.  I am looking to start a side gig and was looking for some ideas.

I have thought of:

Electronics/computer repair - although not hugely profitable, as everyone knows someone.
Soap making - this is something my wife has taken an interest in, there would be room for a small profit here
appliance repair - I am hesitant to so this... I owned a repair business several years back, and do not want to work the 80-90 hours a week I was then.

I currently do in home baking, and am finding this less and less enjoyable.

Anyting that you guys do, would maybe help me trigger something for myself.

Thanks for reading!

Computer repair on the side has been a good side gig for me, I routinely charge $50 an hour for it and would have no trouble ramping it up if I were so inclined. I'm actually ramping it down instead because of a new job. My advice is to do this and market yourself in wealthier neighborhoods where people just need the job done professionally and properly and money isn't as important as the result.

My wife is a jeweler so we've been doing craft shows for four years now. I know a soap maker there who has done very well, it's her full time job (by choice). It has more to do with her business sense than her product (which is good, but plenty of people make 'good' things).

I'm into photography, but only specialize in Real Estate Photography. Not many doing it, even fewer doing it well. I charge 3-4x the average rate because my work is better. Also means I'm not busy all the time trying to make it worth my while.

Our latest work is helping crafters turn their hobby into a real business. A lot of common questions with really terrible answers on the internet. I'm publishing my first ebook later this month. http://www.daedaluslabyrinth.ca/jewellery-resources/craft-show-survival-guide/

If you're considering soap, have you done any shows? I'm looking for first edition readers so I can polish it up for a better second edition.
