Title: Would it be crazy at this point?
Post by: Captain Cactus on June 20, 2016, 08:35:23 PM
I am interested in moving to a small resort community in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with my wife and two young children.  Life is slow there.  Outdoor activities are endless there (skiing, hiking, swimming, biking, etc...).  We love that stuff.

They have the best public K-8 school in NH (probably because there are only about 50 students K-8 total).

There may be some job opportunities there but they definitely would not pay what I'm making now (I make about $110K/year in a medical sales job).  My wife does not work outside the home, she's with the kids all day.  I have a pension from the VA for injuries I got in Iraq so I would have that plus whatever income I could generate up there.

The reason for a possible move would be a lifestyle choice vs. a smart career move.  I would be trading in lots of money and stress for less money and less stress (presumably), and of course hopefully more time and more fun with my family.  We are not high-consumption people anyway but less income means less investing and we'd have to be more careful about our spending than we are right now.

This does not need to be a forever move.  If we wanted to we could always move back to where we live now and I could probably get another sales job selling some widget or another.

I am 35 and we have about $300,000 in retirement accounts between the two of us, which will be compounding for the next 25 years or so.  I have about $1300/month from the VA pension.

Is this totally irresponsible?  Crazy?  Please give me your candid thoughts!  Thank you-

Can you just RE at this level by moving? With $300k and $1300/mth pension that's about $27k/yr (head calc). What are your current expenses? If the expenses gap is too much, you can hold off until the numbers are better. But no, you're not crazy imo :)

I don't think you're crazy.  I think (dream?) about doing something similar.  There may be something to be said for getting a "whatever" job there to make ends meet, even if it doesn't allow you to save much.  Especially if not having the stressful job is a load off your mind.  Make the effort to have as much quality time with the kids as you can.

Anyway you can find a sales job or account executive role that will let you work remotely?  In my company we have quite a few sales roles that are fully remote.  They split working from home vs traveling about 1-2 weeks a months for client meetings and prospecting.
