Worth Buying HHilton Honors Points?
« on: September 03, 2016, 09:10:12 AM »
Am hoping to go back to Hawaii at some point.  My husband currently has 10k HH Points, and we signed up for the HH credit card, which has a bonus of 75,000 points after $3k of spending, which we just paid some college tuition.  Current offer is $6 per 1,000 HH points.  A Hilton hotel in Oahu normally runs about 40-50k in points per night.  Worth doing or save the money?

Rarely are points worth buying unless there's some kind of special. This especially applies to Hilton points.

Figure out the cost per point for both the room and purchase. The purchase price is $6/1000 or $.006/point. Is the room more than $240-300/night?

It's in that range--some dates a little higher in price.

I wouldn't buy points except to make a specific reservation where you know you'll come out ahead. As bacchi said, they are rarely worth buying.

One tip: check Hilton "points and money" rewards, which occasionally end up cheaper overall than both paid stays and points-only rewards, even if you have to buy all the points. I recently found that to be the case for a week-long stay (not Hawaii) when points were offered for sale at $0.005. That was true even with the "5th night free" bonus on all-point bookings with HH gold status (included with some of the credit cards). Search without being logged in to your HH account if you don't have enough points in the account already, otherwise you won't see them.

You don't mention if you acquired the Citi or the Amex HHonors card.  Both provide a 75K
bonus after your minimum spend.  If you have the Amex card, apply for the Citi version
for an extra 75K points after $2000 of minimum spend in 3 months (link from flyertalk):

Otherwise, apply for the Amex HHonors card.  This will give you a total of 160K
points which will pay for 3-4 nights of your trip.

It's usually not worth buying points unless you're just a little short of your trip goals.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
