Why do we want to kill ourselves?

We don't want to kill ourselves with nuclear weapons, we want to kill other people with nuclear weapons.  It's just that everyone is someone's "other people".

Mutually Assured Destruction.

It may fail horrifically in the future, but so far, it's been a big contributing factor in one of the longest stretches of peace on the planet (peace in a relative sense, of course).
