Northern VA / DC People - moving, need advise, please
« on: November 06, 2014, 06:52:23 PM »
My husband got a job in Herndon VA, so we are looking to move there from MA in the next few months. I know nothing about the area, besides some research I have done on the internet. Hoping to get some advise from the local folks. We are a family of 4 (kids are 7 and 18 mo). We are looking to rent either a house or a townhouse, we also have 2 dogs, so having some outdoor access is important. What are some of the good towns to look for a rental? Short commute for my husband and good schools system for our 7 yo is important. I would appreciate any advice!

Herndon is far enough out that it is (relatively) affordable compared to most of the DC area.  Ashburn, Leesburg, and Manassas are area you might want to consider that would be a short commute away.

Herndon is actually a pretty good spot to work from a commute standpoint.  You could probably find decent housing that isn't *too* expensive very nearby.  I'd look in Reston, Herndon, Sterling, Ashburn.  Personally, I wouldn't consider Manassas because you'd have to drive on 66, which can be awful.  The towns I mention would allow you to avoid major highways and keep the commute manageable.

I can't comment on schools, so my recommendation doesn't include that aspect.

You may enjoy this thread about Northern Virginia.

I used to work in Reston, so I know that living in Herndon or Reston is a pretty good bet. It's affordable.

Thank you all! I will check out the N. VA thread. I looked for rentals in Reston per your recommendation (looks like it's very close to Herndon) and prices are lower than in Boston. I am excited! Since my husband got a raise and I get to keep my job we can actually save money! Looks like his commute from Reston is not going to me long and I have no commute at all working from home! Yay!

I say do anything possible to avoid either having to use 495 or 66 or 267, traffic is a nightmare. I think you should just go ahead and live in Herndon.
