Anyone own/rent one? Worth the cost? I am seriously considering installing on win my home.

Is it well water or city water? I would buy one. They are simple to upkeep. 1 CU Ft. bag of carbon should be able to be picked up locally for $100. It would only need to be changed every 4 to 5 years determined by your usage and the amount of chlorine in your water. They are simple devices and depending on your families life style you could get a metered backwash or a simple timed backwash. Just depends if you are there all the time and have a steady weekly water usage or if your usage goes up and down a bunch.
If you are handy you can find an old water softener that somebody is throwing out. Dump the resin, clean and fill with charcoal. Probably should put some washed gravel on the bottom. The head will need rebuilt so it doesn't include the brine draw in process. Might have $60 in the rebuild depending on the condition of the head and $100 in carbon for a 1 CU Ft system.
New a 1 CU Ft system will be about $600 - $650 for a basic timed backwash. You need to know your total flow of you water supply to make sure it can support the backwash and count up how many and the type of fixtures you have in the house to determine the potential flow usage of the house. That will determine the CU ft needed of the system.

Thank-you for the reply. It was very helpful. We are on city water. We actually have an old water softener in our basement, but I am not confident we can do a DIY water filtration system.
