Best peanut butter ever: Government peanut butter. Yep, the stuff they used to give out along with cheese, butter and eggs to poor people. It came in a #10 can, and it was so thick that you had to mix it in with some honey -- otherwise it'd tear up the bread.
Y'all who grew up middle class may've had shoes without holes, doctor visits when you were sick, and toys at Christmas . . . but, man, oh, man, we had the peanut butter.
If they sold that stuff at the store, I'd buy it -- even at twice the price. Then I'd invite my four siblings over and hand them each a spoon.
Best thing available today: Peter Pan in the 5-lb jars at Walmart. It's not cheap, but ounce-for-ounce it's less expensive than other options. I like Jiffy just as well, but it's more expensive.
